Does my RS have recirculating balls, too?

Assuming this is a serious question, AFAIK all Troopers have recirculating ball steering, versus rack & pinion.

Body Damage is Cool
Staying way off track, ninety1troop, my trooper started doing the same thing after my last major wheeling trip. I bought a new seal kit from St. Charles Isuzu and had it overnighted to my mechanics door for 81 dollars. Much better than just getting a new steering box all together. And my mechanic was able to get it taken out, rebuilt, and put back in in less than 2 hours.

But dont cry over spilt milk. You probably did end up better off by replacing pretty much your entire front end.

Are you under some type of warranty? If not run, tow, push your truck away from the dealership and find a decent mechanic. A dealership is not a mechanic. Your entire story reeks of suspicion. When a seal or component fails, if doesn't explode and render everything attached to it useless. Just sounds like a con to me.

First as a general note, the factory skid plates do not protect the rack & pinion steering. If you wheel in large pointy rocks (like I tend to) you could in theory take out the rack on a poorly placed rock. They same could happen to the oil pan too. I've never heard of it happening though.

If you could still drive the vehicle, nothing was broken. You may very well have blown the seal out or even broken a line. But if the vehicle steers ok other than not haveing the power assist, the rack is physically ok.

The bad news is that if a seal was pulled out, as far as I know, its not replaceable, and you do need a different rack. Please correct me if I'm wrong here.

As far as the dealer goes, tell them they took the truck apart, they WILL put it back together, and you're taking it elsewhere for repairs. Keep moving up the chin of command until you get results. Remain polite, calm and curteous, but be demanding, and don't take no for an answer. IF you drove it in, you can drive it out.

Lessons learned, don't take the vehicle to a dealer unless its bone stock with a warranty. Becarful wheeling your daily driver, and do as much of your own work as you can.

FWIW I picked up a rack & pinion that was complete from the tie rods to the joint in the steering column for $100 so I could get the tie rods. Now I need to install the rack

Good luck.

PS the rack & Pinion in the 98+ Amigo/Rodeo/Passport/Axiom is nothing like the recirculating ball type steering foround in the other Isuzu's. It is more complex and expensive than the ball type. Around here the racks at a JY start at about $100 and go up to about $350. The old style boxes are all under $100 pretty much.

Ok, just to let you all know, i completely agree with all of you! There is no way that i could have done that witht the wheeling that i do. The reason for the skid plate was that the "guy" said that there were so many sticks stuck up under my truck that one of them broke it. complete bs, cuz i HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A PLACE WHERE I COULD HAVE GOTTEN STICKS UP UNDER MY TRUCK, plus, i clean my truck, and have searched it from top to bottom. The only reason that its being worked on at the dealership is because my dad doesnt believe me. So you know what? Im letting them "fix" it for $2000, its not my money, and i did all that i could to try and stop them. And just to prove my point, i am buying everything that i can online, just so i have to use his credit card. I am really pissed that he would listen to them, i mean in the past they sold us a van that had to be taken in 10 times in one year, thats almost once a month. So i will let him learn, i offered to pay if I could get the parts and do the work myself. We'll just see what happens, I guess if they replace everything and i make a skid plate and this still happenes, i will still have a kewl skid plate! thanks for all the help, tonight or tomorrow i will order the skidders and when they come i'll go from there.
