Getting the Wheeling Fever
While I'm about to try and pull this for the timing belt change, can anyone tell me if I need a special tool to get the pulley off as suggested in the manual, or will something more generic work? Thanks.

Sometimes an air impact wrench will remove the pulley bolt. Other times you need a way to keep the pulley still while you break loose the bolt. I've wrapped the pulley with rags and then used a chain wrench to hold it still.

Another approach is to put a breaker bar on the bolt and lean it on the frame and then just tap the starter using the ignition key and it will break the bolt loose.

Body Damage is Cool
The easiest way to get it off is to have the proper tool.Makes it way easier and they aren't that expensive.I think I paid like 20 bucks for mine.

It is a simple puller - as mentioned, purchased inexpensively or can usually be "rented" for free from AutoZone/Checker's/etc...

THanks for all the quick responses - it's really the nut that presents the problem as you know - Interesting the dealer tech said they use the starter trick and a local friend of mine has used a strap wrench with success to remove the nut.

I'll post my (positive!) results.

Oh yeah - is that a 22MM or 15/16 nut? I don't have a 22, but 21 won't fit and 15/16 will - dont want to strip it.

Roll Me Over
If it is on your Isuzu Trooper, it is metric. You can do the math or test the fit to decide whether or not a factional size socket is "close enough" for you.

It's a 22, but I've always used 15/16 with no trouble so far. I've had good luck just putting the truck in 5th, locking the hand brake and having at it with a 1/2" drive breaker bar. Don't try to "*****" it off there, grab a holt of that thing and PULL!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

HA HA ... there must be naughty word filters... those stars aren't what I typed... ok then, don't try to "BABY" the bolt loose. Give it a good manly PULL!!!!

Yes it's the Trooper - now I read before somewhere about putting it in 5th gear (I do have a manual tranny), but what does this do - does it hold the pulley?

Well, it holds the engine from turning over, and it should hold it enough for you to break the bolt loose. Works on mine, but others have not had as much success. Try this first, it's the easiest way, resort to more drastic measures only if needed.
