I agree that's the law, but I've never seen a cop in NC enforce it. Other things I've had people get pulled for, but never lift/lower laws.

Jessica's right, theres a difference between actual law and enforcement.
I daily drove my truck at its current height for over 2 years all around the state. Never been pulled for lift laws or even heard a mention of that from a cop (and i've been pulled several times in my rodeo for speeding, expired inspection, etc.)
I bet if we took the legal definition of the laws of our current states and applied them to what we do, the majority of us could find we're "illegal", and I'm not even talking about just SAS rigs.
what it comes down to is, once you start modifying a vehicle, in any shape/size/form, you enter a careful balancing act in terms of legality and its up to you to do the research.

I believe section (a) exempts our vehicles from section (d). º 20‑135.4. Certain automobile safety standards.
(a) Definitions. û For the purposes of this section, the term "private passenger automobile" shall mean a four‑wheeled motor vehicle designed principally for carrying passengers, for use on public roads and highways, except a multipurpose passenger vehicle which is constructed either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off‑road operation.
(b), (c) Repealed by Session Laws 1975, c. 856.
(d) The manufacturer's specified height of any passenger motor vehicle shall not be elevated or lowered, either in front or back, more than six inches by modification, alteration, or change of the physical structure of said vehicle without prior written approval of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.
On or after January 1, 1975, no self‑propelled passenger vehicle that has been so altered, modified or changed shall be operated upon any highway or public vehicular area without the prior written approval of the Commissioner. (1971, c. 485; 1973, cc. 58, 1082; 1975, c. 856.)
I do know that RufustheRam was almost citied in Durham for lift height. The officer told him that it was a city of Durham vehicle code violation.
