Third Row Jump seats #656322 10/14/05 08:55 PM

I've seen a lot of posts on this topic, but not all questions responded to.

1) Are all GenII ('92+) Montero's set up for third row jump seats even when not included in vehicle? Did this option start later? I found an early '92 plain-jane for sale that does not have these seats.

2) Has anyone installed these jump seats sucessfully in a GenI LWB?

thx

Doubt the pre-94s are set up. At least not fully. Stony has retro jumper in his 92. There is no "loop" in the floor to lock them down into. I don't remember how he has them mounted to the wheel wells.

The only 3rd row Gen Is I know of used the rear bench from a SWB. The overseas markets got jumpers in Gen Is.

Yes, I saw overseas Gen I's with jumpers. The problem is where would you get them? I would think the US Montero's had the same cutouts, etc as the overseas ones. They were all assembled in Japan.

Stony's 92 definitely doesn't have the loops in the floor to latch his down into...

All the GenIIs I saw in Germany had the 3 row seats...those were Pajeros that Japan donated to the US for the Gulf War...I bought my '92 from a citizen over there that had it shipped directly from the factory...it's the "plain jane" model as well. I took it to a dealer and had them install the brackets on the wheel wells...got my seats from my buddy who drove for a full bird...Col. didn't use them, and had them taken out and were just collecting dust at the motor pool. I bought seat belts at a junk yard, but have yet to install them...I only let my kids ride back there when we do local around town driving. I don't see the lack of the loops a big deal...even when doing some pretty rough off-roading, the seats didn't lift up any...I can't see that it would be an issue during a collision either...the lack of seatbelts IS an issue though.

I have a '91 with loops on the rear floor but i always thought they were for tie downs. Does anyone know if that's what they are for (jump seats) or handy anchors?

So the brackets on the plain-jane '92, are they seen or not seen? Are the holes under the well covers for the brackets? Are extra brackets needed on the body underside, or were they already reinforced for them? Did the dealer put in different well coverings or just mount through the existing ones?
thx

There's a BIG difference between the cargo hoops and the "seat hoops". I can't say if the holes were already under the wheelwell covers, or if they were already reinforced...Right after I bought it I took it to the dealer and they installed the brackets for me...I hadn't noticed that the seats were supposed lock down until I bought my second (the '95) Monty. And actually, now that I think about it, my jump seats in the '92 do not have the hook thing underneath to lock into anything.

I recently discovered that there are some kind of hooks hidden under the rubber caps behind the wheel wells in my LWB. I assume these are for the jump seats? I too would really like to install a third row, or at least an additional bucket seat in the back, however, I haven't come up with a good way of installing at least a 3-point seatbelt (lapbelt only is not acceptable). I would really like to do a 4-point harness, but they require a roll bar or something similar for mounting so that the seat belt angle is correct. You can't just put it into the floor, that would be too easy.

You may very likely have the "high" bolt point for a 3-point belt. If you have a round filler cap up high back there, pull it off. My 87 SWB had it (rear lap only) and I got a set of 89 rear 3-point belts, as it's usually my little kids back there. (Thanks again LT.) Even if you have those high belt points, you still have to mount the flip ups of course.
