This weekend (Oct 22-23) was the Fright Night run put on by the Point Magu 4x4 club. A few Toyotas were in attendance, including my still IFS '86 4Runner and a couple folks on this board.

I went on the twilight run, which left just before dark and got back around 2:30am. The run went through the Lockwood and Miller Jeep trails and featured a half dozen or so Halloween skits and scares put on by assorted Cal4Wheel groups.

I would rank this as being a very easy trail as long as you have some sort of traction device (locker or LSD). It was a very long trail with only a few harder obstacles, but I had a great time! My truck went over all the harder obstacles without problems (except I did periodically stall with stock low range).

Even more fun were the events put on by PM4x4, including a teeter totter, slow and fast races, and an RTI ramp. I only went on the teeter totter, because us poor Toyota folks can't afford to pay $1 per game after spending about $80 on registration and camping fees. But it was really fun none the less. I managed a whopping 4 seconds of air time out of 2 minutes trying to balance it. It's harder than it looks!

I would love to see anyone's pictures from the run. I am posting all the ones I have from playing around in the Hungry Valley practice rock piles. I have more coming later today along with some video footage.

I was very impressed with the performance of my IFS truck over the harder practice rock course (no pictures of that yet, except for goofing off at the bottom). I have rear Chevys, rear Detroit, 5.29s and 33" BFG A/Ts riding on a 4" TrailDisaster lift. I have lost interest in doing a solid axle swap until I build a cage and do dual transfer cases. I also want to bob the back, because the rear overhang was one of my biggest hangups. I had several hard landings on the rear bumper, but the Hi Lift carrier suffered no significant damage.

Here are a few pictures from the actual Fright Night run

Headin' out

It was really neat seeing the rest of the group winding up the mountain ahead of us. Some of the dropoffs are death sentences on this trail!

Some of the Fright Night stuff

My cousin having some tire troubles. FWIW boggers on circle track wheels don't hold with 8psi

Same truck - blowout number two. Nice to have on board air and a Hi Lift in this situation.

My cousin's turbo HoRunna

The arctic camo 4Runner belongs to my other cousin and her husband. It's pretty well built. Marlin ultimate and ARBs front & rear. I think they bought it from someone in Fresno.

Here's one of their runs on the rock pile. This thing crawls great. The day before they broke the passenger birf. Probably getting some Longfields in the coming weeks.

Here I was leanin' a bit with the driver's side door less than an inch from some major body damage. I think one of the guys caught it on video. This is where I turned out to avoid carnage. I was bouncin' a lot and caught up pretty bad on the rear bumper and remembered I needed to drive this thing home. I am proud to have made it through without being tugged and only a little rock stacking at the end.

Good deal! I didn't make this year's run. Consider yourself lucky to have gotten in at 2:30am. Two years ago I was tailgunner for the twilight run and ended up the leader for the late show by the time we got to the Yellow Jacket turn off. Everybody was stacked up and we just stopped and ate dinner where we were. Got in at about 4am. HAHA

Pt. Magu, a J#$P club maintains the Miller J#$P Trail. Actually they are a great bunch of guys despite their choice of vehicles. Our club, The Gold Coast Cruisers, which is a TLCA club often co-assists on Fright Nite and indeed our President led the SUV run this year.

I don't recall ever taking pictures of Fright Nite, but I have tons of pics of MJT Here

It really was a fun trip. Anthony, sorry you couldn't make it. You really aren't that far either!

Oops, thanks for the encouragement. I am saving up for dual cases and can't wait for the crawl ratio! I definitely was slipping my clutch way too much getting through that rock pile. But boy I had a ton of fun! A front locker would have gotten me a lot farther and I'm worried I would have some issues on the Rubicon without one. But at the same time I feel a lot more comfortable about not breaking CVs and inners with the frontend open.

That trip was a real eye opener, mainly from playing in the rock piles. I found out my truck is capable of a lot more than I thought with IFS. I am just thankful that I didn't break anything, because I was definitely giving my 'runner a poundin'
