I understand the retread plant (for lack of a better word) is in South Dakota. Hmmm.... I had been looking at these guys awhile back, and was thinking about sending them some shot 31 x 12.50's I have.

If I can truck them to Denver, might be worth looking into. Would be nice to have studded traction w/o the studs. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Interesting. I wonder why they're so much cheaper than what I'm looking at a GDT's own site?

I'll definitely have to keep them in mind - if my math is right, I could get five 265/75/16s for $475. Very interesting...

EDIT: It occurred to me that if you order retreads, there is no guarantee that they'll all have the same sidewall. Seems goofy to me to run multiple different kinds of sidewalls on the same truck... hmmm...

Very interesting, especially since we just got a snow dump here. The tires on the two different sites have different tread patterns, maybe the ones on GDT's site are newer? I guess we could always call GDT and get the scoop? MT's with better snow and ice performance would definitely be nice.

Jon we definitely have similiar trucks now as I have the two car seats and crumbs too !

I wonder if the process whereby they make GDTs is not proprietary, but is instead available to anyone who possesses the cash to buy the rights to manufacture the tires that way. That would account for the differences in tire tread, but the presence of the GD grains in both tires.

What do you think? The idea of having different sidewalls on my truck may have put me off of these for now. I'm pretty sure that if I went to GDT, they'd get me identical sidewalls. Failing that, I'm back to my original plan - Kumho Ventures or Dunlop Rovers.

I ordered some Retreads from HiTec a few years ago for my Rodeo and they all came on Goodyear Wrangler RT/S carcasses. So I think they try to match tires up. Great tires for the money in my oppinion. Mine just took a good bit of weight to balance.

mine also came with 5 matching casings, so they must match them... you can call them and ask, they were very helpful with all my questions before I purchased.

I'm pretty sure this is the case...

There are companies who "retread" tires. They have been around for a while. The OTR truck industry uses it quite a bit. Although, they are no longer "retreads", as the technology has allowed them to be much more better. They are truly remolded. This is very similar to how tires are made, they are just recycling the carcass and re-vulcanizing the tread cap to the carcass.

It ain't your grandma's retread. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Mr. Clark is correctà
While itÆs always been moving along, retread technology has improved dramatically in the last 5 years alone. --- New and vastly improved rubber compounds have been developed; buffing machines are now far more accurate at removing the old tread from the casing; the curing/vulcanization process in the molds is now an exact and thoroughly predictable science; etc.

ItÆs still miserably and oppressively HOT in a recap shop û they havenÆt managed to improve that any û but the products themselves are leaps & bounds ahead of what they were even a few short years ago.

Assuming that there are in-fact two (or more) different shops making and selling the same tire - more than likely, theyÆre all buying their stock rubber from the same distributor, and all using the same tread forms in their moldsà ItÆs just that one of them is maybe running less overhead (or simply isnÆt quite as greedy) û Compared to manufacturing a tire from scratch, recapping is dirt-cheap`cause most of the money is in the casing.

Speaking of cheap tires, here is something I'm looking at:

Light Truck Special

315/75R16 overstock/blems.

A/T and M/T treads available.

8 ply rating

Most raised outline white letters

UPS ground to your front door

Sold in sets of 4 - only $481.00

They've got some nice prices on aluminum wheels too...not sure if I want aluminum for off-road though.
