Can I use a gauge cluster with tach from a 6 cyl truck in my 4 cyl truck? Has anyone done this? How do I make the tach match the 4 cylinder engine? I know it will just plug in and I have to change the oil sender to match a gauge, but how do I reset the tach?

I found a link that describes how to do it. Looks pretty easy. I just need an accurate tach to calibrate it to.

I bet you're right....pretty easy. Why bother with a calibrated tach? probably has more to do with simple math. What's the value of the V6 resistor on the tach right now?

Resistance across the potentiometer(sp) on the back of the tach is 27.6K ohms. Is it a direct relationship? Do I just adjust it to 2/3 of the 6 cly value? 18.4K? Also I managed to reset the odometer reading forward to match the orignal miles. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
When did they go to electric speedo? There was a 4Runner at the junk yard with a door tag date of 8/94 with a cable driven speedometer. I thought they were all electric by then. I pulled that one out first and had to go check my truck to make sure it was electric.

27.6k might be mis-leading if the pot was still in the circuit. Might have to isolate one lead such that the rest of the circuit doesn't influence the ohm reading.
First, I would run a test....note the rpm reading with the 27.6k value....then double it to 55k or maybe go half to 14k and see how that influences the rpm readings. Then take it from there. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

ps---my 92 shortbed 22RE and 5 speed has the electronic pich-up vs the cable. So I don't know what's going on there.

I went ahead and borrowed a universal tach and calibrated the replacement cluster. Took about 5 minutes. Seems to be pretty consistent with the universal unit.

don't toss the V6 tach I'm not sure on your year. but My 87 I swaped to a V6 tach ot of an auto cluster. Someone may be lokking to do the same. like you a few years down the road if you still have your truck.

I'm using the v6 tach. I just used the borrowed universal tach to adjust the potentiometer(sp) on back to match the 4 cyl engine.

I pulled a V6 cluster thinking it would work for my 22re, and now its just sitting in the basement.
How would someone with little electronic expierience change it over to a 4cyl?

Remove what you need to to get to the adjustment potentiometer (like, the plastic case etc.). Then plug it in without installing it, and adjust the pot until it reads correctly.

I would recommend a TV tuner plastic screwdriver to do this, to avoid tragedy. Tedious, but not hard to do.
