im dropping a few more bucks into my truck. im running my 84 22r with a downey midrange cam and their rocker assembly now. i have a thorley header and 2.25 exhaust going in as well. what would be advisable for the carb? the stock one i have is crappy. i could rebuild it but would i be starving the motor for gas? i could also get the weber 32/26 if that would be better for my application. its a dd rig that will be regared soon (i hope) to 4.88 for my 33"a/t's im looking to get some more power as well as pick up a lil gas mpg.

Technically the stock Aisin carb has a greater CFM than the Weber 32/36 so you are not starving your motor for fuel. I personally believe you can not beat the stock carb if it is setup right. I would rebuild the stocker or send it out to someone who knows how to rebuild carbs. If you have visual smog in your area the Weber will not pass.

I too was thinking about the Weber swap, but have also heard that the stock carb was way better. what's the best way to set up the stock carb for good performance? i'm sure lookmomnobrains would be interested as well!

I will beat your stock carb with a stick every time compared to my webers. I put a 32/36 on my dads truck to replace a good rebuilt stock carb and it's great. Better gas mileage and I was even able to hook up ALL of the emmisions (well less the charchol canisters ).
My weber 38mm is awesomesauce also. The problem with them if you need to work on them. It takes some effort to get the going sometimes. But nice power up the yin-yang.
It is true the the CFM is lower on the 32/36 compared to the asian but they work much better. There are many differences in the way the carbs work. Notice on a stock carb the driver side choke plate stays closed most all of the time. It only opens with a high amount of vaccumm. This lowers the practical CFM of the carb to much lower than the weber that opens both choke plates at the same time, less restriction.

main reason im asking is because my truck dies out at 42-4300 rpms. the cat may be clogged so thats my reason for the exhaust(the whole thing is shot basically). but after reading these responses, i might just finish the exhaust and see how it decides to run then take my carb options from there.

Josh, I am not sure how you managed to hook up the factory emissions devices to a Weber that lacks all the ports for the devices. I guess AZ does not do visual under the hood inspections or require all factory controls to be in place, other locals do and will fail you in a second for a Weber or altered emissions.
I know you love your Webers, I have a few personal friends who run the 38 and they love them also. They most defintely did not like the hours/days it took to get them setup right though. Which you elude to in your post.
You stick with your Weber and I will stick with my pokey old Aisin.

You'd be rather surprised how simple the EGR and A/S systems are hooked up when you have a FSM to look at. You need one manifold vac line and one venturi vac line and you are in business. Just takes some figuring...
I also got the adapter to use the stock aircleaner. I'm sure it will pass the visual test here in AZ. I'll have to get some pics of the setup.

If you have visual smog in your area the Weber will not pass. just passed a month ago with my webber street lethal carb and all of the stuff below attached. o yea, and it does a great job. Of course it does not have as many ports as John Smith said, but who needs those anyway i notice no change getting it setup right wasn't long, just normal installation and then fine tuning to where you want it. If your looking for a carb that you can customize and control, this one is great. I bought all of the different sized jettings with it so i could (and did) change the fuel flow i wanted to deliver, and i couldn't be happier. hope this helps just in case you wanna know, gettin 24mpg

i rebuilt the old weber 32/36 i had on my 20R, and put it on my hybrid a couple days ago.
now, i'm looking for creative ways of ridding the world of the menace i pulled off my engine. baseball bat, 30-06, crush with an excavator? and this is a 22R carb that i paid $300 to have rebuilt in january. should've been smart and gone with the weber from the get-go.
one thing i noticed, is how well it runs, even with the choke deleted(i removed all the linkage, shaft, butterflies etc). problem was that it had baseline jets, and i had to step up 2 sizes in idle jets to get it right. always ran way lean on my old engine, that's why i guess.
the 22R carb was nice when i first put it on, but it ran way too lean. worst part is that it's not easily adjustable, worse case with the weber is that i might have to spend 10 minutes pulling the top off and replacing the main or air jets

My 38 was easy to set up and is easy to maintain. Changing jets is a five minute deal. Now I do wonder if I could do better on milage with the 32/36. I drive 70-75 and get 17, 18 on longer trips and 16 offroad very consistently.
