Will front seat belts work in the rear of a 4Runner? I have a buddy with an 85 4Runner who wants to take his kid along wheeling but his 4runner has no rear seatbelts. We added a factory roll bar which I believe is where the factory belts mount. Anyway he found a set of front belts on e-bay and wants to know if they will work.

Thanks. And if anyone is cutting up their 4runner to create a buggy I have a buyer for your rear seat belts. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I doubt the front belts would work as-is in the rear. Rear belt retractors are a bit smaller than the front. Plus they are angled instead of vertical like the front, so the little inertia lock thing on the fronts may be locked all the time. The rears seem to ratchet in and out. You could probably just get a non-retracting belt out of an older vehicle and bolt it in place for a lap belt. Or Toyota supposedly still carries the rear shoulder belt upgrade.

I currently have 'front' seat belts out of a toyota pickup with bench seat in the rear of my 4Runner. Everything bolted in fine, and works fine. The only difference is that the belts will not retract fully. The belts work o.k. for a rear passenger, but they really need to be about 12-18 inches shorter to retract to my liking without slack. I've looked into having the seatbelts shortened (cut and re-sewn), but I haven't gotten around to it.

Sounds like the pickup front belts are a little different than the 4Runner front belts. BTW: The rear 4Runner belts do retract fully into the take up reel.

I used Isuzu Trooper rear shoulder/lap belts.

Cost about $20 at Pick-n-Pull.
