Hot diggity... I just called the yard to tell them I'd give them the $75 they'd go down to. He went to check that all was well with the part and came back to say that since yesterday, the tow motor moved it and the shaft is snapped. So I said I'd give him $20 for it. He said okay!

Last night I'm hooking up the switch, compressor, and control module. Hit the switch and no compressor. Pull the copmpressor and put power to it directly and it goes.

Long story short is thank goodness we have another Gen II with a locker. I swapped each of my parts between the 95 abd the 98. The darn control module is no good! What the heck are the chances of that? About 1:1,000,000? And I paid $40 for it from the yard. Electrical parts are non-refundable of course. So I guess the good news at least is that all looks good for the install overall.

The guy was cool yesterday though when I picked up the remnants of the shaft. He said should have told him it was me when I called and he would have given me a better price originally on the shaft. So I'm hoping he'll let me pull something else from the yard in exchange for the module.

Ride On...

I did the same swap. I ended up swapping pinion gears instead. It wasn't fun. I had a shop do the gear swap which required etra shims for the worm gear and longer bolts for the ring gear. The bolt hole for the LS ring gear is also alittle bigger so i had to put some sleaves onto the bolts to keep it form moving. Its been 4000 miles and it still works hopfully it will last for a long time.

I didn't have the chance to find out if the drive shafts are changable or mismatching it will work. Let me know I'm curious to find out. If you need any info on gear swaping let me know.

Well, hopefully the drive shafts are different on the front end. My guess is they are in that they have different PNs for the t-case output shafts. That, and given how the pinion dia/splines are greater on the SR axle, leads to the conclusion that the front end is beefed up as well.

And the reason I say hopefully is that I took the shaft parts to the shop this morning. I beat on the u-joint and couldn't get it to budge much. He had the same trouble and they have a new U-joint coming in tomorrow. So between the flange/remnant shaft, the u-joint (non-EOM), and the labor to install, I'm most of the way to the price of an SR shaft from a yard.

Should have it on the road tomorrow. Only thing after that is tracking down another control module.

I had trouble tracking down a control module too. I ended up making my own control which works identical to the factory one. It will only engage at low 4wd gear, rear lock will light up at display and will disengage at higher speed. I also design it so that it wouldent some-how trun on by accident. Works great so far.

MonteroX you ought to update your profile, and tell us a little about yourself.

How did you make one? I opened it up and it's a small circuit board with transistors and capacitors and all that jazz. Did you recreate it's "affects" by using relays?

And yes, I agree with LandRaider, tell us more about yourself stranger. Sounds like you've been around the block yourself and are holding out on us...

monterotx: I found your thread from the spring on your swap. What ended up being your issue with it not working at first?

I still can't believe that my control module is bad. And I still can't believe how glad I am to have another Montero to swap parts from to troubleshoot. It could have been a very frustrating go otherwise.

When I went back to the junk yard, I found out that the doner montero was smashed in to a cub. I didn't have a chance to see if the axles are interchangable or to get the right control module.

Are you sure you got the right one? Because theirs two unit in the rear driverside panel. The one you want would be the one above the wheel well behind the sheet metal. I made that mistake. Went back to get the right one but is was too late.

My control module is consisit of transistors, resistors, capacitors and relays. One guy on this forums gave me the whole electrical diagram for the car which really help me designing my circuit.

I definitely have the right module. (The other is for the suspension.) The fact that I swapped the same module from our (alright, her) 98 further supports to me that the one I have is bad.

You made one? That to me is quite impressive!
