Gas smell coming out of vents, STILL. #664202 11/08/05 03:53 PM

Ok, I have asked this on the board already and tried everything that I can think of and the suggestion you all gave me but I STILL have a gas smell coming from the engine compartment and you can smell it if you walk around the front of my truck after I have driven it and it is coming through my air vents. I have replaced 2 cracked injectors and the rest of them seemed fine and that is all I have replaced/fixed. Someone said that it could be my charcoal canister. How do you know if that is the culprit and how much would it be to replace it? Any other suggestions of what it could be because I am tired of this gas smell.

Thanks!

I would suggest going out and picking uo either a Haynes or Chiltons manual for your truck. I've got mine at home and can't quite remember what it says on testing the charcoal canister. If you want me to check I can post it later tonight.

I have a haynes manual for it but I wasn't aware that it said in there how to check the canister? So, the canister could actually be the culprit? Any other suggestions of what it could be?

Thanks for the link. So, the gas smell could actually be the canister? I will check it out.

Any other suggestion of what it could be or is the injectors and canister the only 2 things it could be?

Where exactly does the fuel line run so I can check that? It is so tight in there that is hard for me to tell.

Not sure as far as the V6, I've got a 22R, mine has 2 canisters and the fuel lines run into the carb and then various vacuum lines (lots of them, about 25ft.) run out and around. A couple of the lines run to the canisters and I remember when I replaced the vacuum lines, the ones that ran to the canister had some gas in them. I believe that the canisters hold gas vapors so they aren't vented into the atmosphere, so this very well could be your problem....maybe one of the lines running into the canister is cracked or perhaps the canister itself is cracked, a visual inspection would probally be in order first!! I don't imagine those things being too cheap!

Good luck with it!!

Thanks for the advice. I guess the canister might be the culprit.....

Any other ideas if it isn't?

mmmm besides that maybe cracked gas line? Inspect the hard lines running from your fuel rails back to the tank, and check out the soft lines too. I had a crack in one of my soft lines that was almost impossible to see and for some reason only smelled when the vehicle was off, or the lines were not pressurized. Replaced the lines, new hose clamps (not the junky factory style) and hasn't smelled yet!

Need a Spot
The v6 has a fuel line pulse dampener on the end of it. It's extremely hard to see, but it's on the very end of the passenger side fuel rail right under the intake manifold. These leak fuel.

after i did a head gasket/timing chain job on my '91, it worked fine for about a month and all of a sudden, it started getting hard to start and smelled like fuel in the cab. turned out that i had pinched an injector o-ring when i installed it into the fuel rail. an hour and $5 later, it was back together again with no leaks
