Body Damage is Cool
Go drive it, bring it home, do *not* shut off the engine, open the hood, sniff and examine. You will find it this way if you go through the fuel system following the gasoline path.

The v6 has a fuel line pulse dampener on the end of it. It's extremely hard to see, but it's on the very end of the passenger side fuel rail right under the intake manifold. These leak fuel.

Are you saying that it is common for these to leak fuel? What does this dampener look like??

Well, yesturday morning after I got to work (25 min drive) I turned off the engine and smelled under the hood and the smell was not coming from the evap. canister but from under the intake manifold. That is where the 2 injectors were that I replaced. BUT, I had the fuel smell even before I replaced the injectors and the smell is the reason I tore it open in the first place!

I am guessing that the smell is SOMETHING coming from the fuel lines going to the fuel rail or a bad o-ring on one of the injectors. Man, I don't want to have to tear this thing open again. I hate that there are so many vaccum lines and you have to drain the coolant to take the intake manifold off.....Oh well, I guess if I want the smell fixed then I have to do it...
Thanks for all of your help and comments. Please tell me EXACTLY how you place the injectors in the fuel rail (I will check them first and probably replace the o-rings) and how to replace the dampener or check it.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
When you replaced the bad fuel injector make sure you did not pull the other injectors out. The o-ring can tear when you pull on it. Is a one use o-ring.
The fuel banjo fittings that goes to the fuel rail have copper gaskets on them. They usually need to be replaced because the get hardened, and won't seal again. Instead of replacement, you can also heat them up with a torch until is almost dull red and let it air cool again. Do the same with cold start injector.

I didn't replace the banjo gaskets and I took the 3 injectors out on the rail directly under neath the intake manifold and 2 of them were cracked so I replaced them. The third one was fine and the o-ring seemed to be in good shape. I am guessing the banjo gaskets or that 1 o-ring gasket that looked good is leaking every so slightly. The funny thing about this is that I am getting 20 mpg so it isn't effect my mpg at all!

Fuel pulse dampener do leak.
On the 22re it is located on the front side pointing down towards the passenger side on the fuel rail.
It should have a plastic cap.
this link may help...

good luck

Ok, I am going to try and get this problem fixed this weekend or the next. I know I need to go ahead and replace all of my o-rings on the injectors and use some gas on them to help slide them back in to place. Do I need to replace the banjo washers on the fuel rail or will it be fine to use the existing ones? If I need to replace them, how many are there that I need to replace?

I want to make sure that when I tear it down this time and put it back together, that I won't have to worry about a gas leak anymore. Anything else that I need to replace while I have it tore down that MIGHT be causing this gas leak? Thanks for all of your help.

I'd recommend using some WD40 on the o-rings and not fuel. They will slide right in.
You can either replace the washers or just sand them down a little to make them flat again. They are cheap so I'd go with new ones. I have also just reused crush washers in a pinch and not had problems too. Your pick.

I'd replace ALL of the little rubber hoses for vacuum and coolant that are easier to access while the intake is loose. I just did this on my 22re.

I'd also recommend replacing the fuel pulse dampener, because I know they leak and they're very hard to see while the intake is on the engine. It's on the firewall end of the fuel rail, on the passenger side rail, below the intake mani.

Pusle dampener is on the front of the fuel rail, near the throttle body end, the fuel pressure regulator is on the back end head the firewall. It has a vacuum line running to it.
