I put some premium gas in it and the pinging noise I guess I'm hearing didn't change much. It's not a very loud noise and the motor runs great. There is just a loud ticking coming from the valves. So that leads me to belive I'm just hearing the valves chatter when I'm driving it. I left the shift boot off and it sounds like its almost coming from the exhaust. I've heard other 22re's that sound like this so hopefully I'm just too worried about it. So I'm going to get new adjuster screws and I really hope that is all it is. I hope the local dealer has them or I might have to get a set overnighted from you EB. I cleaned everything up really good before reassembling the motor so I don't think it has to do with carbon buildup.

When timng the motor where are the terminals that have to be jumped. The manual doesn't mention where they are. I've never used the light before on a toyota, just set it buy ear till it sounds and runs right.

Regarding the test connector, what year is your rig? The connector is here on my '86, and here on the '87 and '88 rigs. Not sure about later than '88.

As for your motor, can you refresh my memory? Is this a stock RTE, a stock 22RE w/the RTE exhaust, or something else? Are you running the RTE injectors, ECU, and AFM? I know you posted this last month, but I'm lazy...

Also, FWIW, I would never run anything other than premium in a turbo motor. But that's just me.

Glad it's at least running for you.

The combo is I put together is as follows
The bottom end is a 1987 stock 22re.
The top end is a 1987 stock turbo head.
Everything else ecu afm injectors ect. are from the original turbo truck. I just put a different short block in there b/c the original shortblock was siezed. So I guess this combo should give me a compression ration between 8.5 and 9.0. With the stock boost of 6 or 7 psi I should be alright as far as pinging goes?

I'm not sure that the pinging is all that bad. The valve chatter is much worse and that may be what I'm hearing. So its hard to tell if the motor is actully pinging. Except for the valve chatter the motor is running pretty good, it idles smoothly, accelerates smoothly and makes decent power.

I'm ordering a new set of adjuster screws and hopefully that will cure the chatter and I can move onto tuning the rest of the motor.

Well, see what you get after the new adjusters arrive. But still...your motor probably wants at least 91 octane, especially if you plan on putting your foot in it. It will run with 87, but you won't be able to run as much advance, so your EGTs will be higher and the performance will also suffer. Keep in mind, the motor was designed to run on 87 with the original pistons in place. You've raised the static compression, so you should make some allowance for that; at least run mid grade, lol. Also, the louder your top end is, the more likely the knock sensor will be fooled into (further) retarding the timing.

Again, glad it's running for you.

Hopefully I can pick some up at the dealer tomorrow. I really hope new adjuster screws do the trick. Yeah I'm gonna have to break down and continue to run 93. Today at the pump some guy actually laughed at me b/c I was putting premium in something that looked like such a piece of crap.

What about the turbo light on the gauge cluster. Is that suppose to come on when the boost kicks in? It comes on sometimes when the rps are above 2500-3000. It doesn't stay on for a long period of time even if the rpms are up there. I just want to make sure the turbo is functions properly. I'm sure the light isn't dependable and is more of an idiot light. But I was just wondering.

And yes I'm very glad the thing runs. All things considered. I can't believe it runs as well as it does. I'll post an update when I get the new adjusters installed.

No I've been eyeing one for a while now. And being as the truck is missing that side pillar anyway I might have to eventually get one. I've found a guy with a nice autometer boost and pyrometer gauge that I might buy from him if I can get them for cheap enough. I'll try to get some pics over the weekend. I'm headed to the city tomorrow to pic up some parts and hopefully after that the truck will be ready to go.
