 Need to re-index steering wheel

MY steering wheel got pretty tweaked at Uwharrie. Aside form disconnecting battery and removing screws that hold in airbag, is there anything special that I need to do to straighten wheeL?

IIRC, disconnecting the battery doesn't necessarily disable the airbag. I would definately read up in the manual, or find out online the correct procedure for disabling, and equally as important, re-enabling the airbag.
Other than that, rent a puller from Napa and have at it.

Yeah, you want to be very carefull around the airbag. Just a static shock can set one off. We set one off in Auto Electonics class and it was like a shotgun going off. Lookup the proper procedure in a repair manual.

The proper procedure is to dissconet the battery, then pull the fuse, and finally disconet the air bag wiring harness (big yellow thing, can't miss it). I am gonna have to do the same thing this weekend. We did an alinment in class and got it perfect, except the steering wheel is about 2 degress off. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

You are also supposed to wait 10 minutes (I think is the time frame) after disconnecting the battery before disconnecting
anything else.
The air bag system remains charged and armed for a certain period of time (I'm thinking it was 10 minutes) after
the ignition system is turned off or the battery is disconnected.

Mark, What they all have said is right. It's kinda nervewracking though! And actually the driver's was much easier to deal with than the passengers. Just remember, once it's out, don't sit on it, kick it or drop tools on it till you get it back in <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks all! SO basically, It sounds like disconnect battery, hit brake light and wait a while so electrical chares are spent, pull 4 bolts, disconnect airbag, then remove. I guess nest part is unbolting wheel then using a puller to remove wheel?

It really sounds to me as though the problem isn't the steering wheel. I don't think that there is any way to "tweak" just the steering wheel. I sounds to me as though there is something bent in the steering linkage, such as the center link. There just isn't anything that you can do to just tweak the steering wheel. Think about how the system works. The wheel is splined onto the shaft which goes to the gear box. It is a solid connection all the way through. If the wheel no longer is aligned as it used to be, something had to bend or break.

Suspension looks fine. No pulling or reconizably bent steering parts. Wheel is clocked atleast 15 degrees. I wasn;t sure if the wheel was splined or not. All 3 of my 2nd gens seemed to have wheel knocked out of alignment rather easily.

I have seen at least one Isuzu if not two that had a twisted output shaft on the steering gear box. It was pretty hard to spot until the pittman arm was pulled. There was also a 2nd Gen Trooper at Moab that had a bent centerlink that exhibited the same symptoms.
