I think the real question should be: should you really be spinning the t-case at highway speeds? I don't think the older ones were intended to. I think the manual states a top speed of 45mph.

Ok, thanks for all of the 'splane-in.
So, if I want my front axle to pull me thru anything, I have to lock the manual hubs!
I "thought" that if I enguaged the transfer case, with the hubs unlocked, that I would have at least one front wheel pulling, kinda like 3 wheel drive.
Thanks for the help, now if I could just find an owners manual.

If you have the hubs locked in 2wd, you spin the cv shafts (I concur on the needle bearings), front differential, drive shaft, tcase output shaft, chain drive, and input sprocket part of the 2wd/4wd clutch. That's a lot of mass and a lot of wear. This is a PART-time 4wd system. Look at the "bearings" on the low speed loaded gear shafts. I drive in 2wd until I'm almost stuck.

I never had a problem with my autohubs unlocking once engaged, in rocking maneuvers, reversing, or anything, but I carry a pair of manual hubs along, JIC.

I've Selectro Hubs on the 1980 D50 front end and although I do have to get out of the "warm truck" to engage them, they are also bullet-proof and failsafe.
I like them so much I picked up a spare pair NOS as well as a repacking kit.
