If it's the same as the 3.0L A/T, the torque converter should be left with the transmission for engine removal. Remove the inspection plate/bellhousing cover (very bottom of bellhousing - also bolted to the rear of the engine block), rotate the engine engine manually and you'll see bolts through the drive plate (flywheel) into the torque converter. The bolts are inserted from the front side of the drive plate into the converter.

I wouldn't allow a hammer or a wedge <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />within sight of a torque converter.... you never know what they might do....
