i just changed my ax15 for a reman unit last week. today i checked the fluid just to be safe and behold, somewhat burnt. i have added 1.5 quarts extra oil (into the shift tower)and it shifts so much better. i initially put in about 3.2 litres as that's what filling it to the hole and fsm require.
don't try this...read on...

Tom them trannys depend on SLINGING oil around. Overfilling them will cause the gears to run in oil like a propeller. I would never overfil a tranny! Trust me you are doing it a disservice. Think of how many millions of them are running around and a bunch of them are LOW on lubricant... They still work fine. The hard shifting can be temporary, caused by new bearings/gears or whatever. I would take the fil plug back out and let her drain to the hole again. Big JIm <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

why do ya suppose a reman tranny would burn brand new gear oil? only possible reason i could come up with was not enough. it has definatly smoothed second and third gear shifting, which is a common complaint. even without the xmember lowering kit the tranny doesn't lay level in a yj. what are you thinking will happen with an overfilled tranny jim?

For one thing you will get FLOW pressure that is not intended normally. Another you will get h/p loss from spinning in the deeper oil. Many others on this forum have lowered trannys and have no problems you should not either. as for dirty oil... I would change it completely. Perhaps the case came dirty from the rebuilders. Soemtimes on tranny's assembled really tight they will over heat and burn some oil. Do as BJ said and drain and refill, then see if it burns it again.
