I am not sure if a larger one will fit in there. A longer one maybe, if it has the right threads. You could get one of the relocating kits that has an option for two filters from performance products.

How is the wheeling up above Gold Lake? I was up there back in July of '98 but I didn't get to explore much beyond the lake. Each year I have tried to schedule a run there, but my buddies always seem to want to go going somehwere else. Is the area still closed to 4x's in the winter?

just so happens i used to live in lake of the pines and then higgins corner and had a grass valley address at the latter. now i live in plumas pines and there are dirt roads that go on forever. i have done limited driving near gold lake mostly fishing and hiking, there is so many roads in this area as well as history( mostly gold history). they keep the road clear up to a new snow mobile staging area built in '00 but otherwise snow is 5' at that point up to maybe 10' plus. anyways i just got my '90 and am ready to change the oil. the previous owner gave me a "pure one, purolater" and it is the smallest filter i have ever seen.

It should be the right size, the 3.0 uses the same size filter as the 22r(4cyl.) engines. I have always used the Fram# PH3614. When you go to fill it, the 3.0 tends to take about 5.5 quarts for it to register on the dip stick. I find the easiest way to change the filter is to go in through the side above the frame rail. You basically do it blind, but it is easier than trying to get at from below.

I actually live about 7 miles from LOP. If you haven't been down this way in a while, the Higgens Corner area has been built up alot.

if the 3.0 does indeed take a compatible filter with the 22R, you can put a ford smallblock filter(fram PH8A, WIX 1515) on there if there's room. it has about twice as much capacity as a regular filter.

ps -- don't use fram.

I use the stock Tundra Oil filter:#90915-YZZD3.
It is a little taller than stock and you get the Toyota reliability.

Not too sure bout how the 3.0L filter is, but I do know that only some filters have a back flow check valve.
the 3614 does, but the ph16 does not(this is the larger fram that will fit i think)
So in closing, you want a filter that has the backflow "valve" to hold the oil in the filter between eng. restarts to avoid cold startups.
Some filters dont have this valve cause the orientation of the filter ie.. right side up, allows gravity to hold the oil in.
My two cents
