Hafa Adai!

I just pulled my home brew unit off my 2.3 motor. With the 2.6 sprocket I got from DVtrooper (Thanks!) I believe I have a center section unit that will work on both sprockets. This way you can have your original (2.3 or 2.6) sprocket fitted to this center section and Viola!.

Question is how many of you are interested in it and is there any machinists in the house or companies interested in fabing them up. I can have all the details/measurements worked out by the first week of Dec.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Shooootz!

Would this be centrifugal advance (desireable-with restraints) or bolt-and-go?

This is about the cam timing sprocket. Not the dizzy.

Centrifugal advance are available for cam timing sprockets. But are more complicated, certainly above my skill level.

I had and adjustable cam timing sprocket on m VW Scirocco and Audi Coupe. The amount you can shift your motors torque band around is nearly unreal. Could take my VW from tractor like low rpm torque to high reving race motor feel. I bought one, and my friend made a copy.

Not intended as a real how to guide .... But if you have a spare sprocket, drill press and a lathe. It is pretty easy to make. On the lathe true up the inside of the sprocket, square corners are best. Make an aluminum plate to fit the center. Drill and tap the outside circumference, do the same on the spoke area of the sprocket. With a degree wheel mark off + and - 2 or 3 degrees, I can't remember now how many degrees now. Slot outside holes in the plate apropriately. Cut the spokes in the sprocket.

Seriously? That's pretty darn cool.

Yup ... They were way to expensive for my VW/Audi budget back then.

Great link maxwell417. I read about these some years ago and would like (might, even) to build one for our two 2.6 Troops. So much exact precision as well as durability required to prevent toasting engine internals. Lots O' racers use slotted sprockets on a 3 bolt adapter, but I've always thought the centrifugal advance would cover a wider range of driving conditions. Again, great link...Thanks!

Back to your original post, yes, I'd be most interested in the specs for this adapter, as well as a photo or 2. I kept a couple of my lathes and a mill (and some other machines) for tinkering and building gadgets. I would enjoy such a project.

Interesting... Since the diz is driven from the back of the cam, how would something like this be set up to compensate for that ? Or, would the ignition timing necessarily change as the cam timing did ? I'm confused...

I'd be interested in seeing some specs and a photo or two as well. Sounds like an interesting experiment. I've seen or heard about the rally guys running them and wouldn't mine fooling around with one myself.
