I also hear that Cherokee coils are basically the same as TJ coils, they just have a different spring weight... Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone know what the different spring rates are? Would the Cherokee coils be too stiff???

stock rear TJ coil with the top cut off a bit. fits perfectly, and a nice 2" lift to fix the saggy butt on my brother's 87 4runner. no fabrication necessary. total cost: $5 for some 'junk' TJ coils great idea ZUK! I'm interested in this as well....Is this what I need? eBay Thanks....... Give me a few days and we'll know. The 4WP guy said they just throw away the old springs that they take off of stock TJ's. Said if I wanted more to let him know.
If Mad Max had a 4runner...

Very Cool!
Now I know what to do with my leftover coils from the FJ80. The front coils might work better than the rears, they are smaller in diameter.
Napoleon047, how hard was it to cut the coil springs from the tj?
thanks... we used a grinder with a cut off wheel to cut the coil, it wasnt hard at all. since the spring is tempered, it might be tough to cut with a sawzall and i wouldnt even try with a hacksaw

Ken cherokees only have coils in front, and they are identical to the TJ front in dimension, and will have a heavier rate than the rear TJ coils

the image above shows the difference between TJ front and rear coils as well as the approximate cut line we used. like i said before, we just cut enough to open the top. if it turns out too tall, you can always cut more, but if you cut too much, you cant replace it <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I'm going to have to use the front ones. The rears are too short..with my long chevy springs they will fall out at droop.

With all the talk of cutting springs, just so you know: Cutting springs actually increases the spring rate of the spring, which is directly related to the amount of spring you cut off. When cutting them, make sure you're cutting the exact same amount off each one or you'll have different spring rates on each side. Google "cutting coil spring" for more info. There's a few links out there that tells you the formula to find out your exact spring rate. Todd

Getting the Wheeling Fever

Suddenly I find myself very unhappy with my two week old shackles. This is a beautiful idea. Zuk deserves some kind of royalty fee. I am going to do the TJ springs. The local 4x shop is doing a lift on a TJ in about a week so I can get the springs. I am estatic
