i have about two inches of ice and one of packed snow on my road right now. in the last two years VTDOT has run over their salt allowance so they are going extra lean.

for some reason i drove the rig ten miles to town for thanksgiving.

what a blast, nothing like two locked axles, BFG MTs, and center steer for a nice white knuckle ride..i guess thats where the 300 dollar mazda comes in.

cant wait for a good snow run though!

Don't lower your tire pressure; your gas mileage will suffer. Put some weight in the back over the axle, and you'll be fine in 2wd. I toss sandbags in back; got about 300# back there right now. Turn in the hubs when I need 'em.

We've had snow for about a month now.

BLIZZAKS or Hankooks-- am running a Cooper Discovery right now; so far so good; siped. I don't waste $$ on studs.

Wide tires have less of a pressure footprint on the road, which is why they suck on ice, and are okay for snow.

Seems we visit this and heater problems every year....

Are you not happy with your Cooper Discoverer M&S? They are very resonably priced and come in the larger truck sizes. I couldn't find large sized Hankook's, and blizzaks are pricy (they might also wear quite quickly). I think an extra $70 to stud all 4 of tires is extremely cheap for the added benefit....those times you wished you had got those studs.

I'm running the Coopers this winter, due to having an injured (and unemployed) roomie for 5 months. Put us on the skinny, but not down and out.

I've also run GY Ultragrips along with the others; don't mind paying out for Blizzaks when I can. The thing with softer tires is that they don't go hard and lose their traction quality at -40 and beyond compared to other tires.

Screw studs; that means having an extra set of tires around May 1st to Oct 30. Also, the ice gets driven off the roads from -20 down, so it's a waste anyway, unless you live in coastal Alaska.

If the roads are THAT bad for me, I should be chaining up or staying home anyway.

Bear in mind that a pig on ice is a pig on ice; 4wd or not, once you break loose, that's IT. That's why all these new GI's in their shiny new SUV's are in the ditch all the time.

Me: You okay?
Ditch idiot: Yeah, can you pull me out?
Me: Hell no, you were driving too fast, you can sit there for awhile. Got a cell phone?
Ditch Idiot: Yeah, why?
Me: Call 555-1212 for a tow. Glad you're okay.

i've found that brakes are useless in the snow. i don't go faster than i can stop easily by downshifting.

I completely agree.

There was a lady who wrote an artical in our local newspaper up here about DRIVING IN THE SNOW.

Well, she stated NEVER EVER (capatilized too in here artical) downshift, because of ONE time when she did, her tires broke loose in a 2wd Mercedes or somthing. She states to ALWAYS use your brakes.

That artical was intended for first-time snow drivers. As well as *Flat-landers* as we locals like to call them...

Now, I just do whatever I need to do to slow down in the snow/ice, and frankly it is rarely ever useing my brakes.

That artical kinda 'irked me. There are already enough stupid drivers out there driving in the snow with their new SUVs, thinking that they can haul-ass, and plow through anything. The last thing we need to be giving them is bad advice.

Oh well, what can you do? I'll just be truckin' along with my *new* tires, waving as I drive by peeps stuck in ditches, (and there are PLANTY up here )

Heck, maybe I could make a few bucks towin' people out of ditches, or get my *chain-puter-oner-license*

Nah

I think I'll take Margie's route! LOL

Well, work does get pretty slow during x-mas time. So, It could be a way to make a few extra bucks.

Heck, last year I waited in a turnout right after a chain-check, and put people's chains on for $20 bucks a pop.
Made about $100 bucks before a Sheriff came up and told me that I need a license to do that.

I wish I woulda remembered where he said to go...

Anybody got any idea?
