G'day guys, great forum you've got going on here.
My 1991 pickup has a 2.6ltr with a lot of kms on it ( 350,000 ), theres nothing actually wrong with the engine yet, it runs great and doesnt overheat. However i think the bearings are on there way out and it feels a little sluggish.
I know that i will need to replace the engine sometime soon so ive looked into getting a replacement out of a later model that had the 2.6. I just want to know what the differences between the looms and sensors are i.e. could i hook up the o2 sensor to the existing ECU, or would i need to get the whole loom and ECU from the later model car.
I only know of the o2 sensor being different, what other things should i be wary of when doing the swap?? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Cheers Adam.

Welcome to the Wire, <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
The head has different combustion chambers,no AIR rail ports over the exhaust manifold, the injectors are different and the dizzy has a differnt plug if I'm not mistaken.

thanks mate!
Ahh i see, my dilemma is that im not sure if the wiring loom and ECU thats in there already will work with an engine of a later model, i.e. 1991 loom with a 1996 motor?

Somewhere in my memory is a thought that the later 2.6 used sequentially activated injectors and the early used batch, but that may not be correct.
Hopefully Michael Clark will weigh in soon as I believe he is the one that ran into the issue.

JIMIS RIGHT AND MICHEAL DID CHANGE A LOT OF PARTS ON HIS TRUCK, THE ENGS ARE COMPLETELY INTERCHANGABLE , IF YOU SWAP OVER THE DIST AND THE ENTIRE INTAKE MANIFOLD ASSY FROM YOUR OLD ENG TO THE NEW ONE , IF YOU DON,T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT EMISSIONS TESTING JUST LEAVE THE AIR PUMP AND RAILS OFF OF THE NEW ENG , BUT BELIEVE IT OR NOT IT WILL STILL PASS AN EMMISSIONS TEST WITHOUT THE AIR SYSTEM ON THE NEWER ENG , THE NEWER ENG IS A SEQUENTIALLY FIRED INJ SETUP AND THE OLDER ENG IS NOT SO BE SURE TO USE THE OLDER DIST AND INTAKE ASSY COMPLETE AND YOU WILL BE FINE ALLSO USE YOUR OLD EXHAUST MANIFOLD MOST ALL OF THE NEWER 2.6,S USED A SINGLE DOWN PIPE FOR THE EX. THIS INFO PERTAINS TO ENG,S THAT WERE U.S. BOUND AND THE INJ SYS ON YOU SYSTEM MAY BE A LITTLE DIFF , SO TO BE SAFE JUST USE ALL THE CONTROLS FROM THE OLD ONE JERRY

I don't intend to threadjack here, but...
What are the differences in the cylinder heads? I have been told that there is a combustion chamber difference, but so far nobody seems to know what problems will be created if a 96 2.6 head is put on the earlier 2.6 block??
My truck is a 93 and the parts ewngine is from a 96 rodeo.

The CC chamber is smaller.
It works fine on an earlier block. Depending upon the machine work you do, CR goes up to about 9.3.
Runs just fine. If you want to know more, search. It has been discussed several times.
