Getting back on topic: I did a similar thing for a hand-throttle. Overseas, my rig is equipped with a dial-type throttle but here in the states they aren't, however, they're still outfitted with the associated brackets. I picked up an old-style Shimano gear-shift lever (the non-clicking kind) for a ten-speed and rigged it to the built-in hook-ups. Works like a champ.
