I was looking under my hood the other day and noticed that my plug wires were tiny! I know that the wires the previous owner installed were probably some crappy aftermarket cheapies but wow! Is this the correct gauge?
I have always been partial to OEM or NGK guy when it came to plug wires and my crx's/BMW. Will changing out my plug wires make a noticeable difference in the 22r-e at all?

most likely not unless you're one of those people that think taking sugar pills will cure your sickness!
measure the resistance with an ohmmeter, if they are within spec they'll be fine.

Ha.
Well I figured as much but it really threw me off when i saw these tiny wires coming from my cap. I figured if it Toyota put them on there they must be on there for a reason. Just never seen anything that small before, even on tiny 1.5/1.6 d-series honda motors.

Are they OEM wires? If so they will be labeled Toyota and have numbers indicating cylinders 1-4. EDIT My OEMs say Sumitomo. I was wrong when I said they would be labelled Toyota.
I am very happy with the quality of construction of my OEM wires. They are about the same size as the 8mm Accell wires I had on the truck previously.

Well, I've got tiny-OEM wires on mine (3.0).
Not sure if the 22Rxx's are the same though...

Just checked my wires.
They're "yazaki" brand. I'm assuming they're some el cheapo OEM replacments. I know its not like I'll see some huge performance gain if I switch them out but maybe It'll idle a bit smoother with some NGK oem replacements. The wires are relatively new I think.

my wires are black and have some japanese name on them, i'd bet they're OEM. i've never seen any electrical components(aside from maybe an ECU) in my trucks that ever said toyota.

Nope, Yazaki is an OEM manufacturer. They all seem to be Yazaki or Sunimoto that I've seen.
My original Yazaki set lasted 17 years, so I wouldn't be too worried.

I took the stock ones off and upgraded to the accel 8MM wires, I like crimping and figured why not, upgrading the cap and plugs. Was only $30 for the box of uncrimped at advanced auto

Yep, they likely are stock...but only for your model year. Toyota used a slightly different igntion system for '94 model 22REs. And I see yours is a '94. I'm not sure what the other differences were, but one of them was smaller/thinner plug wires and I believe a different type of connector to the cap.
If I recall correctly, and I could be wrong, this system was prone to problems and Toyota reverted back to the old style ignition for the '95 model year, before switching over to Tacoma production.
I've also heard that '94-95 models seem to have the timing chain failure problem happen a little earlier than prior models. I've heard of one '94 chain needing replacement at just over 60K miles and another at well under 100K. So, keep a close eye on yours, unless the chain/guides have already been changed.
