If they rebuilt the tranny, most likely it was just bearings and snycros. Usually the original gears are left in unless there is specific damage. Plus new gears are pretty expensive, so this probably isn't the tranny rebuilder's fault, unless a bearing went out first which cause the gear to go out.

The biggest problem with Toyota transmission and diffs is not that they can't last 200 or 300K miles. It's that owners, usually the ones that have the truck before us, almost never change the fluid as often as they should. They'll change the engine oil every 3000 miles religiously, but then drive on the same tranny fluid for 70K miles.

Yes, the tranny had new bearings and syncros put in, not new gears, so I'm not blaming anyone.

Three teeth sheared off the gear. My wife was driving the truck at the time. She was cruising down the highway at about 65 MPH in 5th gear when it broke. Fluid level was full. Must have just been fatigue from 20 years of driving. The 3 teeth were sitting in the bottom of the case by the drain plug. Didn't see any other damage.

I swapped out the tranny from my '84 4Runner that I just picked up to make into a family rig. So that project is on hold till I get the tranny fixed or get a replacement.
