I'm taking my wife's car in for inspection today, so she drove my '85 P'up to work. So she calls me this morning on her 45 mile commute to work and tells me the 5th gear is making a grinding/vibrating/humming noise. She says 4th gear is fine. I tell her to leave it in 4th and limp it to work. She calls about 10 minutes later after she gets off the highway and says it is now doing it in all gears except 4th. She's only about 3 miles from work at this point so she drives it on to work. She call again when she gets to work and says it's making a slightly less noticable noise at idle while in neutral and it goes away completely when she engages the clutch.
Any ideas? When I go pick her up from work today, I'm going to give it a look, but I'd like to know what I might be in for.
Thanks,

Sounds like your transmission bearings are shot. It doesnt make noise in 4th gear because its a 1:1 straight through drive ratio and the affected gears are not spinning. Not sure what the noise in neutral would be.

Sounds like you have one or more bearings grenading. If that is the case, this might help. Your tranny is a different model, but the process is the same: Toy tranny overhauling

Just looked at my FSM. I'm not happy. This tranny was rebuilt back in May of 2004 and only has about 7K miles on it since the rebuild. It looks like I may have a bearing on the Counter Gear shaft going/gone bad.
I guess the '84 4Runner I just bought to build into a family rig has become a donor.

Oh, now, I actually enjoyed doing the tranny. It's pretty cool axshully. Requires some tools but you were looking for an excuse to buy them anywho.
I would be a little crabby too though if I had just paid someone to ohv mine...

***Update***
So, I go get the truck tonight. It's got a "click, click, click" sound that increases/decreases with RPMs. It goes away when the clutch is pushed in and it's not there with the tranny in 4th gear. Transmission gear oil is full.
I'm thinking throwout bearing or input shaft bearing. Any takers?
Oh, and to top it off, my wife's POS VW didn't pass its inspection. ***** emissions!

I'd go with the TO bearing; also check the pilot bearing while you're in there and make sure it doesn't have any rough spots, or replace it if it wasn't done with the tranny rebuild. After that, under the donor truck you go.

It was the gear on the input shaft. Carnage: I'm looking for a replacement if anyone has one laying around. It's for a G52.

Mine ate a bearing last year. A piece of the bearing got caught in the 5th gear and ate it. I got the gears (2) and bearings from my toyota dealer the next day, $240 total. Not bad.
