I had this problem with my 88. I took the gauge panel out and unplugged the connector on the back. Put some dielectric grease in the plug and made sure I got it plugged in well.

Never had any more problems with it. It's really not hard at all to get the panel out. The hardest part was getting the connector unplugged and plugged back in.
