Cool. I used a 8x9 stereo box with a cheap dollar store cup holder on top. It just sits between the two seats...with a speaker to boot!!!
Wheeling on the cheap sounds like me....LOL

Did some more work on the console today, think I had a little more time on my hands than sanity! I didn't like the carpeted cupholder area, and needed to enlarge them anyways, so, I tore the carpet off, added a piece of wood that hung over the edges a bit to hide the carpet seams and put some Deck varnish that I had leftover from doing my deck last summer.

Now here is the too much time part. I wanted a way to keep the lid from flopping back and breaking the hinge. Soooo, looking around the garage I found an old RC truck that I had. Stole the rear shocks, shock tower, and front shock tower and came up with this!

It not only holds the lid open, but it holds it shut as well!

Very ingenious! Nice job Buck!

Here's how my lids opens. It stays open by resting against the passenger seat. A lot less stress on the hinges this way.

I have a CAD file with the dimensions of my console here somewhere. I'll post it here in a bit if I can find it.

Found it:

This is for a second gen X-tra cab. 4Runners will need to be a few inches shorter to allow the rear seats to fully fold down.

Not about consoles per se, but I have a couple of pictures of the 1999 Tacoma shifter boot frame that I put in my 1988 4runner. It has a cupholder that expands to hold two cups and is a really nice upgrade, since 1st gen 4runners predate any kind of cupholder. The gray plastic almost matches the stock interior and it was pretty easy to adapt and install.

I don't have a means of posting images from a website, but if someone who does can send me an email address via PM, I would gladly send them the images to post here.

OK trying to post first picture. The Tacoma shifter boot frame is installed in a 1988 4runner, but I do have an R151F transmission which put the shift levers farther forward by about 1-2". I put a piece of madrone wood in the space between the shifter boot frame and the console. People with the stock W56 may not need such a piece.

When I baught my truck the PO left a Walmart special center consol. Thing is its grey and matches the interior pretty close. I think I'm gonna keep it.

i bought one from wallmart (probibly the same one since every wallmart in the world is the same) and it fit so tight i didnt even have to bolt it down in my 83 even when im wheeling it stays right there the (pop in the cup holder is a diferent story)

I know that I didn't build this one but I'm gonna post up some pics anyhow. Also I'm betting that its made in china so buy at your own risk (I didn't buy it so I don't know).

Otherwise its an awesome fit and it works great. The top padding is the same color as the dash etc howeverthe body of the unit is a bit lighter. If it begins to bother me I'll paint it, but its fine for now.

there is a ton of room inside as you can see it carrys a lot and it also has a good amount of room underneath for the things you want to hide there are a bunch of McD's coupons in there which brings me to the cup holders. They adjust enough to fit a super small cup all the way up to a supersize very securely.

The only thing I don't like is that there is no hinge on the lid but thats easy to fix.

I gotta say that I could't build on better if I tried, not to say one shouldn't try cause I've see some pretty nice designs.
