Hey Hey,

Its April now and the snowmobiles are put away. The trail trooper (The Chainsaw) was pulled back out and the slow starter hasn't fixed itself. After searching the forums for info and trying all the tricks I found (such as jumper cable ground to the starter) it is still turning slow. I pulled it out and put jumpers on it and then touched the positive to the solenoid and it kind of clunked as it pushed out the bendex, but then it would spin ok. It did the same thing each time I tried it. I didn't think that was normal. I brought it into checker auto and they tested it (I'm not too confident in their tests) and it wouldn't turn at all on their tester. So, I got a new one from them.

Is testing it by attaching the jumper cables with the positive on the main lug, neg to the body of the starter, and then touching the pos to the solenoid's smaller pos an acceptable way to test it? Do you think I may have cranked too much amps through it?

At any rate the new one goes in this morning ($45 part). Any tips for me on putting it in? I polished up all the rusty mounting surfaces, and the blots, as well as the shim.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Howdy Howdy,

I got the old Trail Trooper running last night . I put in the new starter and it wouldn't start, although it turned over nicely. Polished up the wiring to the fuel pump and VROOM! it started. It ran for 10 seconds and then with a puff of smoke threw the serp belt. Alternator locked up. No big deal I thought. I can replace that.

Driving the DD trooper to work this morning and wouldn't you know it, the alt locks up, throws the belt, and actually started on fire. Bad scene, although the fire didn't burn long or damage anything but the alt.

Now I need to buy 2 alts and 2 belts. Wonder if NAPA has a bulk buy discount...

Both Troopers are now back in business. DD was fixed in the parking lot at work same day of alternator fire, the Trail Troop got its new alt and belt last night. The accountant at my work had worked for a parts supply house and got me genuine AC Delco 100 amps for 80 bucks, which I thought was a good deal.

2 alts - $160
2 belts - $40
2 running troopers - Priceless

Now for some swamp time
