 Front wheel bearings ?

Hi all ,
Im new to this forum , so go gentally with me!
Drove my wifes sportage yesterday for the first time in a while and found there to be alot of play in the steering?
Jacked up the front of the car and found lots of play in the wheel bearing. Now having never had these apart before or know very little about 4WD bearings, Can they be adjusted. I have checked the 4WD and it is working ok. They are automatic locking hubs and the car is a 1998 model.Im pretty good with spanners and have changed wheel bearings on many cars before but have not touched 4WD stuff. Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me some advise before i start taking things apart?

The wheel bearings may need replacing - mine had a bit of play too before I reaplaced them. If you rely on 4WD throw the vaccuum actuated hubs away and buy some Warn manuals or Auto mechanicals. The stock vaccuum's are notorious for failing right when you need them.

PS . Im from stockport in the UK. I have been driving mine with play like that for 40,000 miles. Its hard to get the bearings to the exact right tightness on my 95 due to the wheel bearing nut. Its not like other cars, I don't like it but I got used to it. My wife hates it though. Its not hard on tires because I have had the same ones on for that 40k miles.

I'll keep being the ones to defend the auto's because mine keep going strong.
If you are gonna throw new bearings in, use a good high-quality red wheel bearing grease and clean everything extremely well before reassembling, put new seals in everything, VERY VERY lightly grease the internals of the lockout hubs becasue if you can put in wheel bearings you can easily "rebuild" (take apart, clean, and reassemble) the auto lockoout hubs.
I've yet to have any problems regardless of the cold or conditions since i did that to my front end.
BUt if you would rather spend another $100 on some lockouts that you have to get in and out of your new vehicle to engage, then go ahead.
