Folks, trolling this forum helped me diagnose and fix problems before I even bought this SR. Thanks!
I'm pretty involved on Audiworld and have a heavily modified Audi S4. I got the Monty so the Audi could be the "queen", the Monty is the "Can Do" car. I've always liked the GenIIs, and this one was well taken care of and in good shape with 130k and stock.
Of course with turbo tuning experience I have to temper my big "plans" for a 3000GT motor swap. Though I'm sure it's possible and would be fun, I already have a project car. This 3.0 is really anemic tho, AND plows through gas (15-17mpg), nothing you guys haven't heard before. Unfortunately this motor is very tight so I don't have an immediate excuse to yank it out.
I've got a zillion questions about what people have had success with, like exhausts and intakes, and I've searched and read a lot of posts here. Looks like a little well-placed hardware can encourage this engine to do better w/o big mods like turbos or 3.5/DOHC swaps, and I will be more than happy to pull this motor in the future and try some different parts. Too bad there aren't more diesel options...
Just saying hello, and I'll certainly contribute anything I find that does or does not work. Cheers!

Welcome to the forum. There hasent really been too many modified 3.0s here. Mainly because there is little to no market for monteros. One person put a turbo on the 3.0 though. A vr4 TT swap would be badd.

So, what engine do you have? Is it a 24 valve 3 liter? Does it have a distributor?

Have not heard of many modifications that have helped with hp for these engines. The only one that I have heard of is boring out the throttle body. There is debate as to whether a less restrictive exhaust will provide much benefit for these engines.

Does your engine burn much oil?

Glad you're here, man. Stay around and learn some stuff.

I've got a 2.6 in my Montero, so I don't have much wrenching experience with a 3.0, but stay tuned.

Looks to me like one of our board members (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) is planning something a little special for a GenI V6.

Winston; This is the 3.0 12v SOHC. Heard about the throttle body mod, I'm researching whether there's a viable pick-n-pull that's bigger or if I have to send this one off. Engine just doesn't burn any oil that I've observed in 3k miles. It's got a very slight water leak, unknown source, appears at oil filter attachment. It's overdue for the TB (10k) so I bought all the requisite parts for that job including the water pump. Need to get to that soon obviously as I think the noisy pulley is in-fact the TB tensioner.

If it is a 12 valve I believe the timing belt tensioner is a spring. You might as well replace the tensioner pulley and bearing while you are in there.

Change "might as well" to "should" and you're exactly right. There have been some folks who have gone to the trouble to change a timing belt, didn't change the tensioner and tensioner spring and have told some tales of woe.

Whenever a water pump is replaced it's a good practice to change the timing belt. When you change a timing belt it's a good practice to also change the tensioner and spring.
