I thought I could do this myself, after reading some posts here about some of you changing timing belts and things. And maybe I could, but I have a friend telling me that the timing is probably already off and if I don't get the timing right, the engine will be trashed when I try to drive it with the timing off.

Your friend gave you good advice - BUT - that doesn't mean you can't do the job. Get a new bolt, timing belt (and the other belts), timing belt tensioner and spring, water pump if you think you might need one soon and get to work undressing the front of the engine... once you have the timing belt covers off you can see the timing marks used to set the valve timing.

Get some advice from the folks here if needed, but remember that nothing happens until you make up your mind you're gonna fix it and pick up a wrench and start turning bolts..... the job won't do itself - and even if you screw up, you can still get $500+ for it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
