FIPG - gasket goo... #679305 12/22/05 10:01 PM

Another question related to my current rebuild... where is the best place to get the Form In Place Gasket stuff that everyone always talks about? The dealership? When putting my oil pan back on (it comes with the cork gasket), should I put a minor amount of FIPG on both sides of the cork, or just leave it dry? I think I have also heard of people not even using the cork gasket, but using the FIPG instead??? Is this a better method? I am aware of the fact that the FIPG needs to be on the INSIDE of the oil pan bolt holes...

Thanks for putting up with the stupid questions...

Getting the Wheeling Fever
My vote is for not using the cork gasket, instead use a bead of black FIPG from the stealership. I'm sure other RTV may work, but I've always used the FIPG and no leaks.

A good alternative to the dealer stuff is "The Right Stuff" from Permatex.
Don't need the cork gasket, FSM actually says to use FIPG only, but it won't hurt to use it. Just make sure it's torqued down evenly all the way around.

If you're not using the cork gasket and don't want to pay dealership price (last I checked at my local dealer was $24/tube) for genuine Toyota FIPG, go with Permetex black RTV for about $4 a tube. Works just as well as the Toyota FPIG. The important thing is make sure that both surfaces are clean/oil free so you won't get any leaks.

FIPG should only be about $13 from the dealer. I would call around and get some other prices.

I am glad you think so, as far as I am concerned the only stuff that comes close to FIPG is the right stuff. Since I do not know much about 22r's but I thought there were certain years that used the cork gasket and other years that did not.

Another thing you should always do to an oil pan is to flatten the sealing edge of the flange before you install it. Take a small block of steel and hold it flat on the bottom edge of the flange then using a small hammer with a flat face tap the top of the flange over the holes in the flange. Go easy with the hammer.

That's correct; 84/earlier used the gasket, later ones did not. FWIW, the Permatex black FIPG works pretty well.

Does this apply to valve cover as well, some people says FIPG only, other says gasket only. Which one is it??? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

That just demonstrates lack of attention. The valve cover gasket is an o-form. Make sure the cover groove and the mating surfaces are clean.

The HALF MOONS get a LIGHT coat of RTV inside them where they mate with the head, for more than anything, to hold them in place.

Make better sense?
