loud valve tick noise when under load, what is this? #679612 12/24/05 01:18 AM

It is when under load, I notice it a low rpm's like 1800'ish. It is quite loud, but I have no other signs of anything going bad. I have 70K now, oil stays clean and full. No smoke. What is going on?

Are you sure its not an exhaust manifold leak? It will sound similar but will leak out more in a hard pull. If it is leaking you might have a converter stopping up.

No I am not sure, How would I rule out or confirm an exhaust leak? Thank you for the reply.

You might try getting on a real steep hill and raise the hood and have someone drive it in 4wd low in 1st gear and see if yu can hear it. You should be able to hear it at an dile though just not very loud. Mine started to leak between the exahust manifold and the exhaust pipe going out at the flange when the catylic converter started stopping up. I would just raise the hood and start it up and reve the motor by pulling the gas cabel from under the hood and see if you can hear it.

Regularman, Thanks for your time, I will try that. If it were some part of my engine, wouldn't I notice a power decrease or some other sign?

Are you sure this is a "tick" and not a "knock"? The DOHC engine likes to piston slap. It's normal for this engine. It is MUCH louder when the engine is cold and under load. As the engine warms the noise decreases but never goes away completely.

To answer your e-mail. I don't think a compression test will tell you much unless the noise suddenly came about and wasn't doing it before.

Axe, It is a little deeper sounding than a tick, I think this might be it. If it is, then I am feeling lots better.
Thanks a lot. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
