Here is a dooby for all of you.

My 89 22RE(Calif.) is losing coolant and oil!
First off there appears to be no coolant in the oil and no obvious coolant leaks, however I can smell coolant after driving it. I go through about a quart of oil after every 500-750 miles(20W50) My exhaust is not unusally oily in fact it appears dry. I do have a leak in the EGR system code 71 I think. Gas mileage is crappy too, 14 max. The top end was recently rebuilt as well as new rings. I need help.

pull the head , take it to a machine shop for inspection and milling as needed.
check the block for warpage as well.
while the head is off inspect the timing chain, front/real seals and the pan gasket (if you used one) for leaks. pan should be sealed with :
FPIG (toyota)
pematex ultra grey
threebond 1104 (also marketed under the yamaha, honda ,etc name and they are cheaper) - used in motorcycle apps to seal non gasket surfaces (case halves usually). these are a bit thinner (more fluid-like) than ultra gray, be aware of this .
look @ the spark plugs , if one appears exceptionally clean, probably that one is leaking coolant ,and burning it.
most will tell you to get a EB or OEM gasket. i have used felpro gaskets with no problems.
