I want to change the transmision gear oil on my truck. I want to get Red-Line gear oil, but am not sure which one to get. Do you recommend MTL or MT-90. The servive manual recommends GL-4 or GL-5 with a viscosity of SAE 80 OR 90. I called the dealer and they do not sell mopar gear lube. They wanted about $150 to change the trans oil. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> I have a 5 speed manual. Thank you for your help.

I use 75/90 hypoid gear oil on my Gen2. I'm not sure what the older models use but the manual for the gen2 clearly states that you should only use gear oil intended for Hypoid gears. Last year I used regular 80/90 gear oil on everything and the gearbox burned the oil in no time, so did the rear diff. I'm not sure if I did any real damage but I'm sure time will tell.
If someone has a owners manual from a '87 please check it out and post here because I heard that this is the most common cause for the gen2 gearbox to die over here.

clearly states that you should only use gear oil intended for Hypoid gears. I looked it over in the manual and your right, Hypoid gear oil. Are the Red Line gear oils campatible.

I'd contact redline and ask them directly via email so you have it in writing. Also ask them about guarantee's just in case your tranny implodes after using it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

Do you recommend MTL or MT-90. Go with the MT-90 and you'll be fine...I'd run it if I could afford it, or was willing to pay that much for it...

I use Redline GR75W90 for differentials and MT90 for transfer case. Of course I have an automatic so I would suggest you email Dave Granquist at Redline for his recommendations. dave@redlineoil.com

I was talking to the guys at Southern Gear, who rebuild nothing but manual trannies, diffs, and tcases, and they told me the same thing I heard 10 years ago about Mitsu 5spds. They recommend dexron atf in the tranny. The other guy had used it for over 200k miles on the original gearbox, and he didn't baby it - fast driving and heavy towing - and it shifted like butter, with no whines or grunches, and the shifter didn't move when you got on and off the gas (worn thrust washers or bearings).
