Cool, thanks. I talked to them on Monday and the head is in the mail. I got a new casting and told them what I was planning to do. He said it would work just fine. I received ARP head studs from Summit already, but it turns out that the good Felpro gasket is something that Summit orders from Felpro case-by-case. They won't get it until Feb 16, so I'm looking for one local. I really want to get this truck back up this weekend.
Thanks for the reply. It makes me feel a little better. I think I may go ahead and order water pump, 3 row radiator, fan clutch and hoses while I'm at it and replace the whole shebang. This is puting a little sting in the wallet...

when I had my engine rebuilt 40,000km ago I had gotten a used core head and rebuilt it myself...it has been fine ever since and I accidentally overheated the ***** out of it last summer. I blew a heater hose and was cookin down the highway. head is still good. the ARP head studs help ALOT for warping. I suggest everybody go to the head studs. they are a little bit more money but well worth it. I have the ARP rod studs too, I think that was a waste of money but oh well.

What does it mean when temperture goes up past 2/3 within 5-10 minutes of driving then comes back down below 1/2 rest of the day? Is it bad fan clutch? I'm little nervous about cracking the head...

Likely a marginal fan clutch or a lazy thermostat.

You know, I never noticed any signs of overheating before my problems. I guess I'll see the extent of the damage when I pull everything apart. The studs are here. Now I'm just waiting on the head and trying to find a gasket local to me. Hopefully, I'll have this running this weekend since it's my daily driver...

I tell you this because it would have saved me a second head job-...
Get your radiator rodded and replace the thermostat and gasket.
The rads in these trucks are very good at what they do if they're in good flowing condition. With the age of your truck and given that you've already blown a head gasket, I'd take no chances with having to redo the work again in three months.
Life's too short and my time had value.

That sounds like a reasonable idea. I had thought of just getting a three row from radiator barn (I loved the rad I got from them for my old 2.6 Trooper), but I'll check into the price of having it rodded. The t-stat and gasket were a given though. Thanks for the continued dialogue. I hope that head gets here today...

Just back from various part traders. I picked up Starion factory head gasket, t-stat, exhaust and intake gaskets, blah blah blah.
~$120 for all the bits. It looks like I'm ready to start once the head gets here...
Anyone with the Clearwater/ARP combo: What did you torque the nuts to?

Whatever ARP says on the torque. If it's a 2.6 head, you have to do some minor grinding to the webs in the valve cover to get it to seat on the gasket. Think it's toward the rear. Somebody here has a pic up on a post or two.
