I've got a torqueflite tranny I am trying to identify for my Jeep. I am positive it is not a 727. It has the Jeep/AMC bolt pattern and I think it is either a 904 or a 999, but I don't know the differences. Can anyone help me out?

Identification numbers should be stamped on the left side of the case just above the oil pan gasket surface. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

I've got the numbers off of it, but I'm having trouble finding a place to identify them by. Does anyone know any websites or reference material I could refer to?

BTW, the numbers are 8953005018 9222 1956.
And the numbers 964-3 are cast into the bellhosuing.

Not really, it said the main differences are internal. I know what the tranny is not, it is not a 727, which the guy I bought it from said it was. I have narrowed it down to a 904 or 999, but I can't tell the difference between the two. That page didn't have any sort of listings about the numebrs on it. If I had some sort of measurements to go off of that might help but I can't find anything like that either. The cases might even be the same, however the 904 is light duty and the 999 is medium duty. The numbers right now are all I have to go on, unless I can find a way to differenciate between the 904 and the 999. I am going to have to try to call the dealers tomorrow and see if I can find anything out. Meantime if anyone can tell me what I have, it would be appreciated.

I assume you don't know what it came off of. Here's a clue I found that may help.

TF-998/9 can be identified from the 904 by the two external ribs on the case above the rear servo.

Actually that didn't do it. After reviewing pictures of the 999 and 904, and comparing them to mine, they both have two external ribs above the rear servo. Damn.
