Broken Brake Line... #681788 01/02/06 09:50 AM

Hey guys, went out wheeling today and a stick popped up and broke my rear brake line on the axle. It looks like it broke the the metal line off at the screw in fitting on the right side of the axle (from rear) as the line crosses the axle. I of course lost brake pressure and the majority of my brakes, which made for a fun drive home, but my question is what is my best option to fix this? Should I just try and get a whole new metal piping piece that goes across the axle, or it there a way to to reattach/repair the one I have? I don't really have any experience with running brake lines so I don't really know what kind of fittings and pipings that are out there for running brake lines. Thanks for any help,

Dan

I would get a whole new line. Measure the length of the line that is on your truck and then head over to an auto parts store and spend $5 to buy a new line with metric fittings. They usually have lines in length from a foot all the way up to 5 feet or so. Then you can bend it to fit your truck. A cheap bending tool will work, or use objects you have around the house like soup cans, pipe, or other round objects to get nice bends that match the line on your truck.

Go and get a new line they are cheap. all u need to tell them is its an asian import and the length you need (little longer is better you can always put loops in the lines to take up space. and they will give u the correct size. hopefully your mastercylinder didnt bleed dry cause that opens up a whole new can of worms for when u gotta bleed ur brakes.

Ok thanks, I will try that. Fortunately I remember reading that it really sucks if your master cylinder runs dry so I remembered to keep filling up the resevoir so I don't get any extra air in the lines. Once I get the new line hooked up in the back I should only have to bleed the back 2 brakes, right? Thanks,

Dan

No you will have to bleed them all. Start with driverside rear, passenger side rear, passenger side front, driverside front. you might need to bleed that sequence twice.

Good call but you forgot the LSPV which is bled last. You always bleed all four, especally on Toyotas with the LSPV there is a return line that goes to the front brakes for bias. If it has been sitting with the broken line and you did not crimp it over the MC is dry, gravity has taken care of that!!!

Too late now but for future reference you can clamp that broken line shut with vice grips as a trail fix.
