well with my third increase in tire size to 35x14.50 I have decided that the braking system in my 86 4cyl is not up to par!!

I did a little searching and I am familar with the rear disc swaps... which I plan to do, but I had read something about upgrading the front brakes using v6 calipers???

Basically, from what I remember is that the v6 and 4cly share a common hub and rotor size, however the v6 uses a larger caliper = more stoping force???

Is this true? anyone care to spread some light on this?

Thanks
-Dustin

6cy trucks use a 4 piston caliper, older 4cy trucks have a 2 piston.

You might also need a larger bore master cylinder, a V6 or even a Fj80 one is what people use. I'm sure someone will chime in with a better answer.

My 88 V6 truck with 36x14.50 swampers stops great with stock drums, stock v6 master cylinder, and stock v6 calipers.

Also, make sure your rear drums are properly adjusted. If they are out of adjustment you can loose a lot of braking power.

I've never seen a 2-piston caliper on an IFS truck... There are two 4-piston styles that I know of; one w/ 4-large pistons (all in V6's, but not all V6's have these calipers, in my experience), and one w/ two large pistons and two small pistons.

I'd LOVE to see someone market a front brake upgrade for Toy's. Something w/ a larger rotor and bigger calipers. Maybe sonething that requires 17" wheels.

Do these larger 4 piston calipers bolt to my 4cyl hubs>?

as a side note, my 4cyl calipers are 4 piston...and my back drums are fresh and adjusted!!

Excellent... thats what I was looking for... I know I have one front that need to be replaced... and I like to do things in pairs (twins for example) So lets see if this yeilds some improved braking with a larger master as well!!

When you go to get them ask for calipers for a 90 and pull them out of the box and make sure that the have the four big pistons. NAPA tried to sell me the early ones with the two big and two small pistons. I told them they were for the earlier 4 cylinder IFS trucks. We opened a few boxes and came up with two with the big pistons. They both had the same NAPA PN!!!!!!!

I am glad you think so, but you are wrong. Even the 79-85 had four pistons!!!!

This is true. If you go with a set of 92 calipers there the big one's. Toyota made three sizes and by 92 they used the biggest ones for all 4x4 trucks. you'll need the thicker rotors as well. I did the swap on my 91 runner and it worked out well.

And Toyota never used 2 piston calipers on the 4x4's(that I've seen, I've worked on 81~94).

From L to R:
85, 87(4Cyl) and 93(V6).
[Linked Image]

The 85 and 87 calipers are identical except for the thickness of the slot that the brake rides in, they even use the same pads.

It is possible to mill out the slot on a solid rotor caliper in order to use with the thicker IFS vented rotor.
