Hi All.
Posting from Tokyo, day 24 of a 25 day vacation in Japan, first quiet day with net access...
Regarding the comment that a CPI is not a vortec. Say what??? It's a Vortec that's a CPI!
Regarding the swap options: Any GM's gonna take a LOT of time, as you'll need to add your own engine mounts and trans mounts to the Mitsu frame. And guess what? It really does matter to be within 1/4", and within 2 degrees of the "right" location. And you're going to need a new rad in a new location. And don't forget the new driveshafts... The wiring on mine was "straightforward", as the engine/trans are cpu controlled, and seperate from the Mitsu general wiring. Only a few need to mesh in a 1994 engine. But you will need the diagrams. And don't forgrt that fuel pump mod to the fuel tank...
All in, it was more work than you will expect, and more expensive too!

The older TBI engine and 700R tranny and 231 TCase is easy. The newer electronic models are very difficult. There are various designs of Vortec (heads) starting in 1988. The TBI is best for low end torque. The CPI is best for high end HP.

My 350 small block was not that hard of a swap, just a lot of work. Took me about 2 weeks. My radiator stayed in the same location just a larger one. And believe it or not the V8 conversion was actually cheaper than rebuilding the 2.6 liter. And oh what a difference in power. ![[Linked Image]](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/baldy110/Dana%2044%20conversion/DSCF0210.jpg)

What did you do as far as passing smog in California? Assuming you would have have a working feedback carb and conveters to pass? I know for my 87 Model year I needed a lot, how much stuff did you need for an 82?

Interesting to see the swap results. Having to modify the firewall can certainly mess with the airflow controls and interior heater, though. Any problems there? No firewall mods here, but it took almost 3 months to get it this far. Passed smog testing with better than 1/10 the #'s of the former 2.6L ![[Linked Image]](http://www.interchange.ubc.ca/dhuysman/newengine.jpg)

Lucky you ... In Santa Barbara we have get tested every two years, including a visual inspection.
You must be in one of the areas that get tested on when you sell or buy a vehicle.
Passing smog is a lot more work! Regardless of what motor I went with I had a bit of extra plumbing to deal with.
I am curious if you did not have to deal with the distributor would you have still needed to modify the firewall?
