I know that my 99 Amigo has a modified Dana 44 reasr axle, but does that mean that any locker made for a Dana 44 will work? Namely, I am interested in the Ox locker that is cable operated or the detroit E-locker. Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with these lockers?

I thought Peter P (pplotz is his screen name) had one on his 98 amigo. The swap was not perfectly smooth due to the specific ring-gear setup that the Isuzu Dana 44s have, but they were able to get it in.

I can't remember the specifics too well. You could try to PM him, but seeing as how he is living in Hawaii right now, it seems unlikely that he is spending much time on this board.

I don't have any first hand experience with the 2nd gen D44, but any D44 full case locker, like ARB or Detroit should work. The main issue with those axles is re-gearing, but the locker should fit. You just have to take into account the thick Isuzu ring gear, and order the propper model (i.e. 3.73-)

The main issue people talk about with these axles is with lunch-box style lockers, that install into the factory carrier. But since you have an LSD, they should be an option as well.

Powertrax No-Slip is definitely an option for a drop-in (the only issue people have are with 2nd gen *open*... search Bansil's posts for more there).

As far a full locker (ie carrier replacement), Peter did make an OX work in his 2nd gen, but it wasn't without problem. I don't remember what the specifics were, but I don't think its a direct fitment.

It should work but check with Matt Indy4X. Our D-44 has a low profile carrier in order to accommodate a spacer with teeth next to the ring gear. This spacer is part of the ABS system and senses sudden changes in speed. I know the ARB air locker works fine with the Isuzu D-44.

From what I've heard, the problem with the second gen d44 is with gearing. The pinion shaft isn't the normal size and this requires sleeving it (as Pplotz did), or finding a different bearing.

If you just want to switch to a full case locker, that should be alright, but you have to use the numerically lower carrier, and you will lose the tone ring for the abs, like Pete said.

IIRC, you are correct. Peter did change ratio's at the time his OX was installed.

If your interested in the Ox Locker, I'd say talk to Matt, he's been doing a little homework with the R&P and there might be a solution that is easier than mine. All in all, I love my Locker, but the work to get it in is pretty tough, but the ox guys said they documented everything for the install, so they might be able to help you as well.

After saying that, ARB and E-locker are pretty easy installs from what I'm told.

You can PM me if you have any other questions.

Oh ya, as for the locker, I love it. Many people have witnessed the abuse I put on it
