From what I've heard, the problem with the second gen d44 is with gearing. The pinion shaft isn't the normal size and this requires sleeving it (as Pplotz did), or finding a different bearing.

If you just want to switch to a full case locker, that should be alright, but you have to use the numerically lower carrier, and you will lose the tone ring for the abs, like Pete said.
