if i had a r151 would i have to convert it to top shift?

That depends. According to Marlin, turbo trucks with bucket seats had top shift transfer cases and turbo trucks with bench seats had forward shift transfer cases. Of the 3 turbo trannies that have passed through my hands, all had forward shift transfer cases. (Mine is the only one that I KNOW had a bench...)

Plus, your truck likely has a G series transmission and forward shift transfer case that will need to be converted to a top shift case in order to work with the dual transfer cases. You can likely swap your forward shifting case for a complete top shifter from Inchworm or Marlin for an additional price.

I thought you could use a forward shift case for the front case, but the rear has to be a top shift(or been converted to top shift).
I'm pretty sure a freinds truck has the forward/ top combo in his truck.............Karl

You are correct. The front case can be forward shift. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

That is correct. But you still need to disassemble the front case to change out the shift fork and split the transfer case in half. It isn't rocket science but I wouldn't call it trivial either.
