Body Damage is Cool
Looks like it's a 4.56 diff. I checked the ring gear it has a 41 stamped in it.
I counted the teeth on the pinion it looks like 9.
So 41 teeth on the ring and 9 on the pinion so it's a 4.56 right?
Anyways already installed it the power doesn't feel bad at all it turns my 35's fine actually feels a little pepier without a locker in the back.
Anyways found a cool calculator:

I was under the impression that 31" tires were only an option with the V6 and that all 22's came with 225's (at least for 89-95 trucks) from the factory.

So a 22RE 5-spd (89-95) pickup would almost always have 4.10's.

Let me know if this is not the case...

Generally this would be correct for a 22re 5-sp(same for stock 3.0's 5-spd's w/o 31's except of having 4 pinions instead of 2). However depending on what options a dealer offered(and what the buyer was willing to pay), 22re's w/the 5-spd's could have come with the 31" tire package and 4.56 gears. It is always a good idea to check the door tag codes and also count the teeth to make sure, unless you are buying from an original owner who still has the dealer sticker.

Well, after looking at my '89 brochure , it does appears that at least for '89 pick-ups, the 31" tire option was only available on V-6 trucks, no 4 cylinder models. Not sure about later models, including 1990 and later 4Runners.

I agree that the dealer could have changed the tires/gears (or anyone else could have...), but I doubt that they would have changed the door tag to indicate this.

So the only way to know for sure is to count either the teeth or tire revolutions (if 3rd member is still installed).

Also, on my 4Runner with factory 31" (well, 265/70-16) tires, the door tag still indicates 225 tires, and I have yet to see one that says 31" (or 265...) on it. If I decode the axle codes from the sticker, it does indicate I have 4.10's (but I knew that since I bought it new and still have the window sticker).

So, the only way to know for sure is to count...

Nope I was wrong it's definately a 4.11 carrier.
For some reason toyota factory 4.11's were painted pink on the end. Mine definately is so I think I miscounted teeth on the pinion.
Anyone else know about the color codes on the pinion ends?

My 89 4Runner with a 22RE had 4.56s stock.

I bought a chunk out of someone's bare axle (dunno the year, but it WAS an IFS rearend) and it was 4.56 too.

That's why I'm running 4.56 gears, not 4.10 like I thought I was going to. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Yeah you prolly mis-counted the pinion: 4.56 and 4.10 both have 41 teeth on the ring gear:

41 ring 9 pinion = 4.55555555 ratio
41 ring 10 pinion = 4.1 ratio

So go take a good, long look at the pinion - it's hard to see down in there. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

All the ones that I come across with the factory 31's also still list 225's, the only thing different on the door tag is the gear code being G25? instead of G29? for 4.10's.
