Is a 60 center any more "in the box" than a 9"? Cmon Randii, people have been building custom from scratch 9s for decades. :p

If the 60 CVs were on any of the rigs at sema I didn't see it. Closest I've ever seen em to competition was on a table at tech inspection. Not that I personally check over each rig, so I could have missed it. They certainly are big and impressive looking. I know there was a lot of excitement over the sunray setup, but then they started breaking. IMHO thats more due to the extreme angles they were pushing and not the part strength. At a certain point a single u-joint stops trying to turn and just tries to break itself. Back to the original question about portals, my friend Rusty put toyota discs on his mog portal axles. Theres a huge thread entitled "check out THIS buggy" in pirates gen4x4 section. They seemed to work fine, but he did mention that they could be better. That was his first run with the rig though, so there is certainly room for adjustment.

I think a 60 is a bit more accepted. Jus my opinion, tho.

Agreed that the Sunray setup is cool, and that folks are trying to get too much angle out of them. Just because you CAN does not mean you SHOULD... those are massive parts, but when you turn that far, the leverage really adds up. You said "At a certain point a single u-joint stops trying to turn and just tries to break itself..." which is exactly right.

Well thatÆs the failing of the singe "U" Joint design. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" /> IÆm surprised someone hasn't come up with a duel U joint setup. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> (Double Cardan)

There would obviously be a length issue between the inner ôCö and the spindle. You would be trying to cram a lot of shaft/U joint in there. But there are lots of aftermarket/custom inner ôCÆsö so a manufacturer should be able to change the offset of the ball joints to move everything outwards.

Unless thereÆs something about a twin U joint design IÆm not seeing???

Actually a number of stock axles use dual-cardan style joints. I know the (mog?) Portals that the Littles run has em, and I believe those sharp turning New Holland Tractor axles Randy Torbett runs have em too. They are actually fairly common in heavy equipment, just not in lighter duty vehicles.

BTW, those Longfield D60 CV's came up in a discussion with some friends tonight. One just happened to have a magazine with a little blurb about em. $2000 a piece <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> Thanks, but I'll stick with whats been proven to work under hard abuse.

Well the longfields have a lifetime warranty. And from what I here they stand by it 100%

Not sure if itÆs worth the money, but itÆs defiantly a way to go.

That they do, but I've watched a lot of "lifetime Warranties" last about 2 years, the lifetime of the company. Not to say anything about longfield, but for that kinda money I'd rather stay with something more proven and cheaper. Besides, CTM offers a warranty too. Not that I can really afford any of em. Heck my stock 44 axle has been broken for almost a year now <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Ya I here that.

IÆm still not sure what IÆm going to do with the dana44 and 60 for my Samurai buggy. I was thinking about getting the 35 spline shafts for the 44 and get the bigger Detroit/ring & pinion. But IÆd have to change out the spindle also. And thats a lot of work and money to beef a 44. It might bee cheaper to find myself a 60 for the front.

Although I have almost 2 sets of spare shafts/hubs for the 44 IÆve got now. I might just have to run them until they break.
