Getting the Wheeling Fever
This appears to be an extensive repair. any tips or shortcuts?

How many hours should this job take?

I've heard of using split boots, but i want to service the cv joints as well.

It took me and my dad 4 hours to do the first one....(im embarassed by that) but only cause we got grease on the replacement boot. Dont do that. Keep it real clean all the way through. Took us 30 minutes to do the 2nd one.

Dont go with split boots. Get the mechatechs from Matt @ INDY4X.

Thanks, I found that page by accident about 30 minutes ago, printed it out too.

Pardon my ignorance, but how did getting the boots greasy

matter?

It matters more the more you lift, but even with stock suspension. The boot is clamped to the CV cup, which is the part that drives the CV joint. That cup is made of steel, so it gets real slippery when you get grease on it. When you go to put on the boot, it needs to be dry so that it will stay on long enough to get a clamp on there, and so that you can adjust the final postition of the boot on the axle. If you dont have lift, its not as important, as you are not fighting against extreme angles.

I strongly second that!

The full Mechatech Boot Kit was one of the best investments I ever madeà
And man, it sure is easy to use!

I would suggest getting the Mechatech CV Boot Replacement Kit from Independent4x...
It contains everything you'll need to replace that torn boot, including CD-ROM video instructions on how to do it!

They are proud of those kits eh?

I am taking the axles off, and then have the boots put on professionally for about $15.00 ea. Well, that's the plan.

Thanks for all the help.

Since you would have to remove the entire axle shaft for this to work, I might reconsider this plan. Without dropping the entire front axle assembly, you will only be able to remove the outter half-shafts. That will allow the mechanic to replace only one boot, the other one would have to be installed when you re-install the half shaft.

I'd gladly spend an extra $50 to avoid having to drop the axle. Not that the Mecatechs are the only way to go, but the procedure is the same.

Good luck,
