I had posted a while back about my 97 T100 having problems, well after being at the dealership a week they finally got it diagnosed for me and called me with the details yesterday. They said my injector in #1 cylinder is going bad, for $360 they could replace it or for $450 they could take all 6 out to send off and have cleaned/checked, so I opted for that. Also found I had a oil leak around the valve cover gasket and they said replacement would be about $250 total inc/labor......I thought this was pretty high but they said they would replace some other seals and o rings for that as well. My starter was going bad and I had figured to have the contacts replaced, which I was told would be about $200 total....so there must be a few hours labor involved there since I know the contacts are like a $25 part, or am I getting screwed over??

Last thing is my clutch, which they said they would replace the whole thing and warranty for 1 year for $862, which was the cheapest of any dealership around my area.

Any ideas, comments??

BTW this is in Western Oregon

$450 to have the injectors removed and sent out doesn't seem terrible, but make sure the place they are sending them is a reputable shop and flow tests and balances them. A report on the injector performance would be good, too.

$250 seems high for a valve cover gasket, but I am not sure what else they have to remove to get the covers off. You may want to ask why it is so high.

$200 to replace the contacts is very high. It is usually just the battery side contact that goes bad. I did mine on my 3.4 4Runner last year and the price at the dealer for the battery side contact kit (28226-54340) was $6.32 (my motor side contact had no wear). It took me about 45 minutes to remove the starter and replace the contact. I saved some time by just changing the contact with the starter laying on the frame rail, as there is not room to actually remove the starter without removing some other stuff. This may not be the case on your T100 but is on the 3rd gen 4Runners.

Here is a pic of the old vs. new contact:

Not sure about the clutch, so maybe someone else can help here (although that does seem a little high to me).

Clutch price is average. Injectors were quoted to me at $200+ each, part only. The whole top end of the engine needs to come apart to get to the valve cover gasket, which I read someone else recently had quoted at $140, part only, so add a new throttle body gasket and whatever vacuum or coolant lines they decide need replacing. The only thing I can't see is $200 for the starter contacts, but other than that the prices are in line with what dealer parts and labor run these days. The local dealership is up to $85/hour now.

If you have time you can pull the injectors out yourself and send them to cruzin performance where they will clean them, flow test them, and put new o-rings on the injectors, all for about $12 per injector. I did mine last summer and http://www.cruzinperformance.com does good work.

The hardest part about the starter is actually removing it from the truck. Once it is out replacing the contacts is cake.

Dealer prices are getting pretty high. I just took in my T-100 and my Camry for some work. Charged $349 for the T-belt replacement on the truck and $289 for the car. The coolant flush seemed a little steep at $129. The car also needed one CV joint boot replacement at the cost of $49 for the part and $200 for labor. The dealer also wanted about $250 for a front brake job on the car, new pads and turned rotor. I refused that one and did it myself complete with new rotors for $100.

They also wanted $300 to replace the idler arm when they did the recall. I said "no thank you" and ordered the bushings and seals for $18.00. The dealer initially told me there were no serviceable parts on the idler arm--but when I pulled out the part numbers I got off the this site they backpedaled a little bit. Asked where I got those numbers and promptly ordered me the parts.

Thanks for the help.

at those prices you could just replace the entire axle assembly instead of repairing them, although i live in an apartment complex with no garage or car port going to the dealer is a last resort with me, of course when i do need it fixed i hardly have the money for parts and labor. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

Any time ive been to the dealer i end up paying about twice what i get quoted for, $700 for gear installs cost me just under $1200 out the door. Timing belt and water pump didnt go too bad, about $500.

On the T100 you can fully remove the starter and do the contact replacement on your bench. I spent an hour maximum pulling, rebuilding, and reinstalling the starter. Do this yourself and spend $20 for the contacts and new plunger.

To my mind, all of the other costs seem reasonable. Have them do both valve cover gaskets while they are at it... since they pull the whole top end apart anyway.

I second the rebuilding the starter on your own, i spent about $10 on contacts through Roger Brown (4crawler).

The 200 for valve cover gaskets seems like a ripoff to me since they'll already have most everything off the top of engine (which is the bulk of the labor) to get the injectors out.

Might want to have them check/adjust the valves while they have it apart too (which also shouldn't add too much since they've already got it all apart!).

Do the contacts yourself and save $190.

Got my T100 back last Saturday.......ended up being around 1080 for clutch instead of 872 they had told me, the reason was they ended up deciding to replace the clutch pedal bracket w/labor that ended up being about $200 total. I had not told them to do that and I could have done it myself so they didnt charge me for it........it was bout 220 for valve gaskets replaced (both), 460 to replace 1 injector (it wasnt clogged it was just dead) and 120ish to replace plunger/contacts on my starter. Runs much better now, shifts much better too...still have a little stiffness going into 1st-might have them look at it.

Overall was fairly pleased with dealership and would do business with them again (at least the person I dealt with anyway).
