I just got an 04 4x4 trd extra cab. I used to drive a full size truck. I've noticed that the tacoma tends to wander on the road. I have to pay attention and really drive it. Is this normal?

This is not normal, have the front end parts inspected for wear and then have it aligned.

Also, what brand of tires do you have? If you have the stock BFG Rugged Trails, then you may need new tires to solve the problem as those are notorious for wander on the highway.
Other than the tires, it is not normal for Taco's to wander.

hupptoy My 04 has the BFG Rugged Trail tires and it doesnt wander but the slightest movement of the steering wheel causes it to head for the oppisite lane so you definitely have to pay attention. Makes it tough to change cd's while driving.

Yes check front end componets and align...you could also be noticing the extremely tight steering...the slightest movement initiates a turn whic is a bit different than most full size trucks.

There is a ball joint and steering relay rod recall in effect right now; they are in our Toyota Tech Archive section.
Also consider the idler arm bushings being worn out as well. You can fix that yourself; parts under $30 from the dealership.

Could it be that your fullsize truck had an actual steering gear box, and the Taco is equipped with rack and pinion steering more like a car in it's response on the road ??

In addition to what's been mentioned above, old tires and/or alignment can make it wander. I noticed a large difference when I swapped to new tires and had it aligned.

Is there any adjustment to loosen up the steering a bit? The tight steering is really annoying and quite unlike my previous Toys. Time to start looking for a rust free low mileage pre '95.

Thanks for the info. It appears my truck satisfies all the variables everyone has put forth. The truck has 28,000 miles on it so the tires are getting close to replacement. I'll probably follow all the suggestions when I replace the tires next spring. Thanks again.
