Getting the Wheeling Fever
Can anyone here give me some torque numbers for these two engines? Ever since I replaced the blown engine in my 91 wrangler with another 4.0 I've had several people ask me,"Why didn't you drop in a 350?"
I just don't think a 350 offers that much more torque in a usable RPM range for me. I could care less about HP. In a jeep I want GRUNT. The bulk of my driving, both onroad and offroad takes place between 1500 and 2500 rpms.
How much more power, if any would a 350 make at these RPM's?
Lets assume both engines are stock and unmodified. Lets have the 350 be injected, just to keep it fair.

stay with your 4.0 and if ya want more power sroke it...unless you want to replace your drive train ....does this question really have to come up this much? no offence..but ask yourself what do you really want your jeep to do ...if its offroading then your 4.0 in fine..

I fully intend to stay with my 4.0. I'll put another one in when this one dies sometime in the distant future. I think it's hard to beat an inline six for most of the wheeling I do.
I was just curious to know what the numbers were. So many people seem to be doing V8 swaps into YJ's that I was curious to the real versus supposed advantages, such a swap conveys. What will a V8 swap do for you that a gear swap won't? Is it like my coworker (an old bonneville racer) says? "Putting a 350 in a jeep just lets you have a jeep that goes WAY too fast."

i would listen to your co worker...he sounds wise....the amount of torque you will gain to the amount of $ you will spend will not make it a wise swap unless your planning on running huge arse tires....for the average to mild orroader that 4.0 will do anything youll ever want....heck even the 4cyl offroad is an awsome engine...

It really depends on how you build the V-8. My old f250 had a stock 390 in it that made a whopping 375 ft./lbs. at 1600 RPM and 200 HP at 4200 RPM. If you build a stroker with an RV cam you can get 300+ easily below 3 grand. Most V-8's don't actually turn that many RPM's. Usually I see torque curves kicking in round 1.4K and peaking at around 2500-3500 on a V-8. If I were to swap in a v-8 just for torque I would really consider that 390...
But then again, Why??? The engine makes more than enough power to do anything a jeep is meant to do or good at. I personally think that a V-8 is too much power for a short wheelbase near stock jeep.

The 4.0 makes 220ft/lbs at 2500 RPM.

Body Damage is Cool
Some numbers I found for Chevy Truck engines
73-86 stock k10,k20 350v8 175hp 275ftlbs T
87 350 v8 TBI stock V10,V20,V30 210HP 300ftlbs T

Lots of torque. No RPM's given.
